At this period the parish church of St Mary, Rostherne, did the BMD for the following small villages- Agden, Bollington, High Legh, Martell cum Warford, Mere, Millington, Over Peover, Over Tabley Rostherne (village) and Snelson, So whilst you man may have been from Rostherne parish, he may have lived in any of the villages around. That's why I always state of Ollerton, which is part of the Knutsford Parish., because the Massey's on my tree came from both villages. My Richard baptised at Rostherne but from Over Tabley at birth /bap - 3/11/1736 . Its all to do with the poor law I guess. The other thing that is not often realised is that Massey name originated in this part of England, so is extremely common in the area. It is difficult to trace people because as you know their mothers name is not always given at baptism. There may be as many as five people of the same name in an area of 3 miles at the same time. you can only work out the 'possibles' by time trade and location, and witness names at marriages etc... Interesting though. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I am trying to discount him in my family tree searches around Rostherne/Knutsford. I guess even if he was 21 at the marriage he must have been born 1735, or earlier, I think it unlikely that in this period he would have married before--- all the hand loom weavers I have are about 25, at first marriage, in this period. I suppose they had all been apprenticed -so didn't have enough money or prospects to marry for a couple of years. Mj Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Hello all A few months ago a number of Internet Service Providers changed the way they process incoming email and rejected any messages coming from mailing lists with the subscribers's email address in the "From" field. The change was made by the ISPs in order to reduce spam by those faking the "From" field. Unfortunately, this change caused a number of subscribers to be unsubscribed from RootsWeb lists since their ISPs were rejecting list mail. To ensure RootsWeb mail gets delivered to all subscribers, there's been a change in the way the "From" field displays in RootsWeb messages. The change means that when you send mail to the list, the "From" field will display the name you've set up in your own email program followed by "via" and then the list's email address. This change may also affect how you reply to the list. To avoid problems, when replying to list messages be sure to select "Reply All" and then double-check that the list's address appears in the "To" field. My apologies for informing you after the fact, but list administrators were not notified in advance of this change so we were unable give subscribers a heads-up. Best wishes, Lynne

>From the Bolton News: " ALMOST 130 years of history was torn apart when a blaze wrecked a former Great Lever primary school building. "The Victorian building — which was built in 1886 and left empty in April — is now set to be demolished as soon as possible after the blaze on Monday night. "Permission was granted on May 20 for the building to be bulldozed but the council is now planning to hand it over to a demolition team immediately, earlier than originally planned. . . . James GRAY dob c. 1850 is my gt grandfather. Mary Ellen GRAY, dob 1878, married into the LOWN family in 1898 and Ann GRAY, dob 1880, I believe married Abraham Ashcroft in 1901.. James' son HERBERT dob 1881 is my grandfather. Most of James' children worked at the Standish bleach works at some time or other. There is a wonderful photo on the Wigan World website of a Gray family in Ince, c. 1910. The very tall boy in the photo has a remarkable resemblance to my late son Mark. However I cannot go further back than James GRAY. At his wedding to Jane Wellman on 23 Mar 1871 he gave his father as Edward GRAY, agriculltural labourer, deceased. However, I cannot find any records of this particular Edward. There may be a link with Dorset as that is where Jane Wellman lived. Any help or clues would be greatly appreciated. I would like to correspond with anyone who has a connection to the Critchley family from Penwortham. My cousin's DNA matches someone with ancestors who lived there. My earliest Critchley ancestor that I know of was named John, who was a mariner, and whose son William was born in Liverpool on November 3, 1816. Bob McVicar mcvicar@ripnet.com
Hi Arlene There is a large number of "Baron's" stemming from the Great Harwood, Blackburn area. Around 2005 they were being collated and transcribed by Flo Montgomery at her website These days the site requires an access code, but clicking on the form will allow you to email the Administrator to get one.:- http://gthbarons.tribalpages.com/tribe/contact?userid=gthbarons I haven't used the site since then. My BARON connection was back in 1788 with no further links. My great grandmother Elizabeth Lowe (Burscough) and John Baron (Wigan) lived in Barrow in Furness. I am planning a trip to England in September and wondered if there were still families with the surname Baron and Lowe still living Barrow in Furness. I am trying to locate the burial of a Richard Massey, Farmer of Ollerton, Knutsford, Cheshire, England. baptised in November 1736 at St Mary , Rostherne. There is I think an erroneous link on some family trees between the death of Richard Massey , weaver of Blackley who died in 20 Nov 1757.and this baptism. Richard Massey born 1736 married Sarah Cherry at Sandbach by licence in 1759. They had several children baptised at St Johns, Knutsford. His wife Sarah died and is buried there in 1775. I have not found his burial. The boy Peter Massey when aged about 7/8 was placed under an indenture to his stepfather Bradley Pass of High Legh, Cheshire, a Blacksmith -- at a cost of £7 (pounds). This is a deal made by the Overseers of the Poor in the Township of High Legh. dated 3rd day of July 1764 for an apprenticeship of 11 years. As he is not 'one of mine' I have not investigated the marriage of his widowed mother to this Bradley Pass. Hope this helps, I am still looking for a burial for Richard Massey of Ollerton, bapt 1736 at Rostherne. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
