Do you know the ship in question? If so try and track down the log, if the master did his job he should have recorded the birth, although again far from all did Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. If she wasn't registered in Liverpool I can only think she must have been born in NY or on the ship. It seems her birth was too early to be recorded in NY and the family who knew her (all gone now) said that she was born on a ship. I think I will try for a marine birth but other than that I am stumped. She surely would have had to have been registered if born in Liverpool? I do know that they lived in Alfred Street so perhaps that was the address they lived at when she was Christened. The whole thing still isn't entirely clear because the Christening record that I found on Ancestry gives her birth as 13th July. I know that's her because it also gives her Father's occupation - Master Mariner. When I sent to GRO for her birth certificate giving all this information and asking them to look at a year either side too they came back and said there was no record. The family story is that she was born onboard ship but her census records say she was born in New York. Thanks for taking the time to look anyway. Unfortunately this James Gray, (the only one who seems to fit the bill) is the son of Thomas GREY. Thomas appears on many subsequent censuses, and was still alive at the time of James marriage. Without confirmation of a wife or an address it is difficult to pinpoint Edward. I cannot find any death certificate and he doesn't appear on any censuses with a son James. As you mentioned, James Gray named his first born son Edward James, perhaps after his father ? Thanks again, I just hope some family in Standish/Wigan might be able to help. I have been stuck on Edward since 1990 ! Regards David Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
