We had a lovely pub lunch with family and friends. Also got some new notifications from Ancestry today mainly on the LOWN family. My granddad's sister Mary Ellen married into the Lown family so the information I have received will add a few more lines to that part of my family tree. I/We have several connections to Liverpool. I was born there, although I grew up in Manchester. My wife Carol was a nurse in Alder Hey in the Sixties and our late son Mark went to university there. His ex wife and children now live in West Kirby on the Wirral. I'll let you know what the Lown's produce for me. There is an indenture -issued by the Overseer's of the Poor in High Leigh in the County of Chester, dated 3 July 1764. This is for a boy named Peter Massey to his stepfather Bradley Pass , a blacksmith of High Legh. At a cost of 7 pounds, for 11 years. His mother Catherine Massey married Bradley Pass in that year, and another child was born to the couple named Bradley Pass in September 1764. Baptised at Rostherne, St Mary. She appears to have been born c 1726 as she is 78 when buried. 29-3-1803. This implies that her first husband Richard Massey the weaver at Blackley, who died Nov 1757, was also born c 1726, possibly in Bowdon, Cheshire. I have checked the Indenture, but you need to check out the parish registers and bishop transcripts for other info. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The original certificate should clear up the parentage. Mary Ellen was in the Workhouse at Withington from 25th to 29th February 1892, and was readmitted the same day, being discharged on 4th April. Presumably the birth took place in this second period. It is quite likely that the 4th Regiment were posted elsewhere between the conception and the birth, making a wedding impractical at the time. They were certainly posted elsewhere after the marriage, with children born in Hong Kong, Singapore and Malta shown on the 1911 image. You have been busy and have certainly given me some homework to do ! Your first two entries are new to me. However, in the first one, unfortunately it cannot be my gt grandfather James. This James was not born until 1876 whereas my gt grandfather James married in 1871. It is quite possible this family are related. I will certainly look into the marriage of Edward Gray and Margery Alker as their wedding date would fit in neatly with James' dob, c. 1850. Also, a Mary Gray signed James & Jane's marriage certificate. You will be pleased to know that your third entry, 22 High St, is certainly my gt grandfather. I have all the censuses since 1871 and all confirm this address and children. I also have a copy of James and Jane Wellman's marriage certificate. I haven't come across the Broadhurst family before but at age 30 our James was married for almost ten years and had several chidlren. Baptism & Births. St WILFRID'S Church is the local church in Standish, across the square opposite the bull pub. Several of my ancestors are buried there. However I think the baptism and birth are one and the same James, son of Thomas GREY who was still alive in 1871 with no trace of a son James. Once again Maureen, many thanks for all your research. I have been stuck on James' father Edward since 1990 when I started genealogy. Unfortunately my mother Maggie Gray dob 1 Nov 1908 died when I was only 15 and I then joined the army. After 30 years service I retired in 1994 and the army dropped me off in Bicester, near Oxford where we still live. I will certainly follow up the new leads and let you know how I get on. Might not do it this weekend as I shall be 67 on Sunday. Best Wishes David Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Hello listers, I'm finding it relatively hard to trace the ancestors of my grandfather's grandmother Annie BURTON (1852-1923) who herself was born in Manchester and died in Southport. Her ancestors were born in the area of Liverpool, Warrington, Manchester, Ashton Under Lyne and in West Riding Yorkshire and move around quite a bit. Her grandmother Hannah BURTON nee Williams (born around 1782) possibly moved from Liverpool to Ashton Under Lyne with husband William BURTON and their children around 1820, where they had two more children baptised. Hannah BURTON seems to appear in the Ashton Under Lyne census returns for both 1841 and 1851 but seemingly without her husband who may have died there before 1841. Would anyone with access to the 1851 census be so kind as to look her up in the census for me for more details on this entry and her place of birth? Regards, Leslie
