Author: infosending1 Surnames: SOMERVILLE Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.lan.general/52851.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hmmm, I thought that your name sounded familiar, we've spoken before, quite a few times. Suggestion, you might want consider slowing down a bit and focusing on one or two items at a time, you seem to be spreading yourself a bit thin. The quick bottom line on this is...Sumi48 not only gave excellent advice, but was also spot on. The answer to your problem with finding David's identity is a spelling error, and the big clue to that is on the certificate of his 1914 marriage to Sarah Wright nee Holland, they were both illiterate, they both signed the marriage certificate with an X,..."his mark...her mark". I'll leave out the investigation part, as I said, the bottom line is...David's correct birth name, and death name, was...David SOMERVILLE. It all starts around 1066 with the Norman French conquest of Britain by William the second Duke of Normandy First aka William the Conquerer aka William the first, King of England. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norman_conquest_of_England Which is why David was, probably very distantly, as were and are, millions of people in Britain, descended from the nobility, but unlike lots of Brits whose British ancestry may only go back to more recent ancestors who moved to Britain from other countries, David's family have been British for almost a 1000 years. One of William's men was Sir Gualtier de Somerville, and his name comes from his home in Normandy in France, which was either the town of Saint Omer, or one of about three villages with the same name, that's how the name Somerville was created. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Somerville_(surname) http://thescottishtartans.co.uk/a-z-of-clans-2/clan-somerville/ http://www.scotclans.com/scottish_clans/clan_somerville/history.html http://archive.org/stream/familiesofheadso00came/familiesofheadso00came_djvu.txt As I suspected, the name Somerville is mainly Scottish, after he had conquered Britain, William the first rewarded his knights by granting each of them large areas of land, Sir Gualtier de Somerville and his descendants were given land in the north of England, and later in Scotland. David's parents and siblings, ( at the time of his birth ), were all born in Scotland. David SOMERVILLE was born in the West Derby Registration District of Liverpool between mid November of 1866 and the the end of March 1867, ( parents had, and still have, 6 weeks in which to register a birth, and until more recent years births were recorded in the quarter of the year of registration ). His birth was registered in the first quarter of 1867 Volume 8B Page 263 http://liverpool.gov.uk/births-marriage-deaths/copies-of-certificates/ He died in 1943 as David SOMERVILLE aged 77 in in the Manchester Registration District Volume 8D Page 489 http://www.manchester.gov.uk/info/500203/births_marriages_deaths_and_nationality/1144/buy_a_copy_certificate You'll find his birth family in Manchester on the 1871 census at Rowbottom Street Manchester. His dad was called John, he was a watchmaker, and his mum was called Agnes. So lots more relatives for you to lose track of...just kidding :):) 1881 Can't find any of them. ! 1891 Thorn Street Manchester, just David and Agnes and 8 year old nephew John Bates. David is head of household, moulder in ironworks, mum Agnes is a 59 year old widow. 1901 40 Princess Street Prestwich Manchester, David, a moulder, is married to Elizabeth, not her firdt marriage, her previous married surname was Whitney, and they have a bunch of Whitney sons and daughters living with them. 1911, 38 Princess Street Miles Platting Manchester, same again, wife is called Elizabeth Ann. So, both Sarah and David suffered bereavements in middle age, but then they got together, and hopefully had a long and happy marriage. Just like Frank said perhaps... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hlSbSKNk9f0 Anyway, I have had a pint of Boddys in their honour, and I'm sure that you know what that is. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GVMEOG7MtYs No luck at present with Sarah, but get David's death certifiicate and see if she registered the death. You might try this as well, but the fee is £30 a pop... http://www.1911census.org.uk/1939.htm http://www.hscic.gov.uk/register-service Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
