Author: SueClark222 Surnames: TURNER, CLARK, ARCHER, STEWART Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.lan.general/52852/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Sarah TURNER was born in Lancashire, England in about 1833, She married James CLARK on 9 Nov 1856 in Eccles, Lancashire, Their children are: David, John, James, Mary Ellen, William, Joseph, Sarah, and Thomas, born between 1857 and 1877. Sarah emigrated to the United States in 1904 with her youngest two children. Her husband and two oldest sons emigrated years earlier. They all went to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. The other children remained in England as far as I know. There is no father listed for Sarah on her marriage license. Most censuses say she was born in Horwich, Lancashire. I am interested in finding her date of birth and her parents. I have the CLARK family in all censuses from 1861 on, both in England and in Pennsylvania. . On her son Thomas' UK birth registration, Sarah's name is listed as Sarah TURNER. On her son John's US death certificate, it says that his mother was Sarah TURNER. On her son David's, it is listed as Sarah ARCHER. On her daughter Sarah's, it says her mother was Elizabeth STEWART. It would be interesting to see what their mother's name is on their UK birth certificates! In the 1841 census, I found a Sarah TURNER, age 5, living with Richard and Nancy ARCHER on Pendleton Lane - the same street that Sarah listed on her marriage record - in Pendleton Township, Salford, Lancashire. There are two younger ARCHER children there as well. Perhaps Sarah was Nancy's daughter. I cannot find this family in 1851. John JONES, who lived with his wife and child at 29 Cardwell Street, Bolton, prior to WWI, with a family member. "The paperwork was discovered among the belongings of his mother, Marjorie Dunn who was married to George Alwyn DUNN — known as Alwyn." (Hmmmm. . . . I have both JONES and DUNN in my line. You will probably have most of this information already. George Parker Wright was born 1871 in Manchester. His father George Wright (a joiner) was born 1844 in Wigton, Cumberland, to Parker and Mary Wright. Parker Wright was born 1819 in Gill, Cumberland, England, and was also a joiner. Mary was born 1826 in Caldebeck, Cumberland. In the 1891 census, all of them are living together in Newton, Lancashire, with Parker Wright, born 1883 Newton Heath, Parker is listed as a grandson to Parker senior, and thus also seems to be a son of George (born 1844), who is listed as a widower. (This Parker Wright (b 1883 Manchester) appears in the 1911 census with wife Elizabeth Walsh.) In 1891, George Parker Wright (b 1871) was working as a postman. In the 1881 census, George Parker Wright was with his grandparents, Parker and Mary, at 15 Lowe Street in Newton. In the 1871 census, George Parker Wright (one month old) is with his parents, George Wright and Margaret Yates (who married Manchester 1870) in Newton. These FreeBMD entries seem relevant to George Parker Wright: Births Mar 1871 WRIGHT George Parker Manchester 8d 364 Marriages Mar 1893 Wright George Parker Prestwich 8d 339 Deaths Jun 1912 Wright George P 41 Prestwich 8d 502 It seems as if George Parker Wright and Sarah Holland had at least 3 chiildren by 1911. They were Bertha, born c 1904 Ardwick; Annie born c 1908 Miles Platting; and George Parker, born c 1911 Miles Platting. In 1911, they were living at 123 Albion Street, Miles Platting. Sarah's father, John Holland (born 1849 Salford), was living just down the road in 1911, at 94 Albion Street. He was working as a carter for a chemical company, and had two children still at home. David Summerville was listed as a widower when he married Sarah in 1914. It seems he was born about 1868, given his age on the marriage record. There is a possible marriage for a David Somerville in Manchester in 1897, to Elizabeth A. Tattersall or Whittney. In the 1901 Ancestry record, David's name has been mis-transcribed as Clarid. This 1901 record shows that David was born 1865 in Manchester, and his wife Elizabeth Tattersall (later Whittney) was born 1861 in Manchester. Four children with the surname Whitney are in the household, so these are the children by Elizabeth's previous marriage. David was working as an iron moulder. They were living at 40 Princess Street in Miles Platting. However, in earlier census records, it seems David's birthplace was given as Liverpool, in 1867. The 1891 census shows him living at 5 Thorn Street with his widowed mother Agnes; his occupation was moulder in an ironworks. Agnes is listed as being born in Scotland. The 1871 census lists his father John F. Somerville as born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1834, and mother Agnes in Stonehouse (possibly Lanarkshire?) in Scotland. John was variously a watchmaker and a riveter, and unfortunately, David's marriage record doesn't indicate his father's occupation - just that he was deceased, so the evidence to confirm that this is the same David is somewhat circumstantial.. This may be John's death: Deaths Mar 1890 Somerville John 51 Manchester 8d 247 This is most likely Agnes' death: Deaths Mar 1895 Somerville Agnes 65 Manchester 8d 242 FreeBMD has no deaths for David with surname spelled Summerville which might match, but there is this entry in FreeBMD which might be his: Deaths Dec 1943 SOMERVILLE David 77 Manchester 8d 489 This may possibly be Sarah's death: Deaths Dec 1945 Somerville Sarah 74 Manchester 8d 346 Ordering certificates through the GRO would be the only way to confirm absolutely. Hope some of this is helpful. Kind regards, Rosemary Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
