Just a few bits from the records: There is a June 1872 marriage in Burnley for Paul Crowther and Mary Ann Ashworth., which suggests this birth record in Lancashire BMD may be George: CROWTHER George ASHWORTH 1874 Newchurch Preston Lancashire NEW/55/56 Lancashire BMD also has this marriage record: CROWTHER George TOWNEND Mary Elizabeth 1903 Bacup, St Saviours Preston Lancashire CE27/2/68 And these births which may match: CROWTHER Annie TOWNEND 1914 Burnley West Preston Lancashire BUW/48/63 CROWTHER Edith Mary TOWNEND 1905 Bacup Preston Lancashire BAC/12/71 CROWTHER George TOWNEND 1904 Bacup Preston Lancashire BAC/11/38 CROWTHER John TOWNEND 1910 Bacup Preston Lancashire BAC/17/13 In the 1911 census, George Crowther is aged 37, born about 1874 in Bacup, and is a Manager in the Hay Straw Coal Liner And Furniture Removing industry. Mary Elizabeth is 35, also born Bacup, and children Edith Mary and John are in the household. They had been married 8 years and 3 children had been born, of whom two were still living. Presumably George is the one who died, as he is not on the census record. If George was a widower when he married Ann Carter Rathbone, then possibly this may be Mary Elizabeth's death: CROWTHER Mary Elizabeth 55 1930 Burnley East Preston Lancashire BUE/83/73 Good luck with your searching for relatives. 3. <<snipped>> What makes you think he was in the 3rd battalion? I would say given the movements he was in the 1st Battalion <<snipped>> Assuming that Nivard is right about who we're talking about, he appears in the "British Army WWI Pension Records 1914-1920" collection on Ancestry - as I'm sure you know from your reference to "He was in the 3rd Battalion Loyal North Lancashire according to his record card (service number 18921)" It's important to understand that people can move between battalions (and between regiments even) and the "Statement of Services" for William shows which units within the LNL he served in. The section shows: 3 Bn Attested & Posted 18/12/14 1 Bn Posted 7/4/15 Depot Posted 18/6/15 3rd Posted 26/8/15 (i.e. 3rd Bn) ... 3rd Discharged ... 19/5/16 So he was in the 3rd for training, then he was posted to the 1st in France (and his Medal Index Card shows his date of entry to France to be 7/4/15, i.e. his date of posting). *Presumably* after he was wounded, he was posted to "Depot", which probably isn't a single place but just an organisational term for people still in the regiment but not on the strength of any specific unit. And then he must have recovered sufficiently to be put back into the 3rd until they decided he wasn't going to make a useful soldier any more. Adrian B

    3. It does help a little to give a name you know <g> I assume its William Arthur BELL ? His silver war badge roll entry shows he was a private with the Loyal North Lancs 18921 badge number 93052 enlisted 18th Dec 1914 discharged 19th May 1915 KR 392 XVI wounds whether served overseas = yes His medal card shows he went overseas 7th April 1915 to France 1915 Star Victory British war medals What makes you think he was in the 3rd battalion? I would say given the movements he was in the 1st Battalion The medal rolls may show his unit, they are at Kew, not online At the time he joined up, he may have had some choice as to the regiment, so did he have loyalties to it? had friends in it? earlier family members in it ? By the way the cause of death would be tuberculosis (Phthisis) Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 10/08/2014 16:09, Janet Baillie via wrote: > Hi, Here's hoping someone can assist me. > > > > My Great Uncle was wounded at Givenchy in 1915; he had his right thumb shot > off in the action. > > > > He was discharged to pension as unfit for active service in 1916 and > subsequently died in 1917 of Phthisis pulmonaris (pneumonia) > > > > He was in the 3rd Battalion Loyal North Lancashire according to his record > card (service number 18921) but that was a reserve battalion based in > Felixstowe. He was discharged to pension as unfit for active service in 1916 and subsequently died in 1917 of Phthisis pulmonaris (pneumonia) He was in the 3rd Battalion Loyal North Lancashire according to his record card (service number 18921) but that was a reserve battalion based in Felixstowe.
