    1. [LAN] Henry William RAYMOND, b 1819-1821 St Mary's, Lancashire
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: genealogist1515 Surnames: Raymond Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.lan.general/52863/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello! I am doing this on behalf of a friend. She has been searching for many years for the birth of her ancestor Henry William Raymond, sometimes called Harry. He was born around 1819-1821 according to his army records, in St Mary's, Lancashire. However all traces to find his baptism/christening have failed. He probably married Anna Lennon in 1845 in Ireland but my friend hasn't obtained the certificate. If anyone could possibly locate Henry's birth record that would be simply wonderful! He later retired and lived in Liverpool. Thank you! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I'm afraid she will have to get the marriage- he seems such a mystery! My friend has indeed looked into the Henry Raymond born in Liverpool 1825, however it isn't him because he is on the census with his wife at the same time our Henry is living with Anna. The evidence trail that leads back to Henry? What does this mean? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: Sumi48 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.lan.general/52861.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: A certificate is really needed here. What is the evidence trail that leads back to Henry? A good start would be to confirm the maiden name of his wife and if indeed she is nee LENNON then get that certificate. If that says his father was also Henry and a blacksmith, then it is just POSSIBLE that Henry was christened in Liverpool in 1825 with 2 other siblings. I have also seen her first name spelled Kiziah. Her father was Thomas Skelding, a miner. I know she married Henry Fleetwood 26 Feb 1865 in Liverpool, Lancashire. They had a least two children, Ann Elizabeth (b. 25 Dec 1865) and Henry Hesketh (b. March 1868). I have been unable to find either Keziah or Henry in any censuses, or any death info. after the birth of Henry Hesketh. I presume they died in the Lancashire area. I do have a lot of info of their daughter Ann. The next time I find Ann (post christening) is as a boarder in Edgbaston in 1881. Does anyone have any further info on this family? Author: alanmon Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.lan.general/52856.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: If you look on a current map you'll see that 77 Lord Street is near London Street. If you then look at a 1900s Ordnance Survey map (google will find it) you'll see that it was called West Street. If you then look at the 1911 Summary Sheets for West Street you'll get a list of names, addresses and business types. Look for addresses that are next to London Street. Look at Kelly's Directory for the 1900s, that will include details of the businesses on West Street (you'll have to read and make a note for yourself). Then look the names up in the 1911 Census, see which may be suitable. HTH Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Thanks Adrian and Nivard for your help -----Original Message----- From: Adrian Bruce [mailto:abruce@madasafish.com] Sent: 10 August 2014 17:34 To: 'Janet Baillie' Cc: 'Nivard Ovington'; lancsgen@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: [LAN] WW1 - Regiment at Givenchy in May 1915 - 3rd LNL <<snipped>> What makes you think he was in the 3rd battalion? I would say given the movements he was in the 1st Battalion <<snipped>> Assuming that Nivard is right about who we're talking about, he appears in the "British Army WWI Pension Records 1914-1920" collection on Ancestry - as I'm sure you know from your reference to "He was in the 3rd Battalion Loyal North Lancashire according to his record card (service number 18921)" It's important to understand that people can move between battalions (and between regiments even) and the "Statement of Services" for William shows which units within the LNL he served in. The section shows: 3 Bn Attested & Posted 18/12/14 1 Bn Posted 7/4/15 Depot Posted 18/6/15 3rd Posted 26/8/15 (i.e. 3rd Bn) ... 3rd Discharged ... 19/5/16 So he was in the 3rd for training, then he was posted to the 1st in France (and his Medal Index Card shows his date of entry to France to be 7/4/15, i.e. his date of posting). *Presumably* after he was wounded, he was posted to "Depot", which probably isn't a single place but just an organisational term for people still in the regiment but not on the strength of any specific unit. And then he must have recovered sufficiently to be put back into the 3rd until they decided he wasn't going to make a useful soldier any more. Adrian B

    3. Hi Nivard, Oops! I did forget to include his name on my original email! <bigger g> He is William Arthur Bell, my paternal grandfather's brother and, thankfully, apart from a maternal great grandfather's cousin, the only family (eventual) casualty of WW1. I just couldn't see anything other than the 3rd as it seems to be marked all over the records and I have missed the fine detail. I would then need the war diary of the 1st LNL from Kew to see what was happening in May 1915, is that right? Incidentally, I know not why the LNL - his brother Ernest had joined the 2/5 East Lancs Regiment and ended his war at Hargicourt having been taken prisoner on21/03/1918.
