    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: RxCairns Surnames: BIRD, BEVERLEY, PARTINGTON, TAYLOR, FLAVELL, LLOYD, YOUEL, LAWSON Classification: biography Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.lan.general/52869.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: You need some dates in order to find people. Maybe this will help. Your grandfather: Harold Bird was born June 1932 in Manchester (mother's maiden name Youel); he married Sheila M. Lawson in Manchester in 1957, and it looks like they had four children including your mother. Your great-grandparents, Frank Bird and Jane Youel - Harold's parents were Frank Bird (b 1910) and Jane Youel (born 1905 Chorlton), who married in Manchester in June 1931. Frank Bird was born in 1910 to John Bird and his wife Elizabeth Ellen Lloyd, who married 2 July 1892 at St Luke, Miles Platting. John listed himself as a reed maker, son of Samuel Bird, chimney sweep and lived at 153 Oldham Road. Elizabeth Ellen listed herself as daughter of Robert Lloyd, cooper. Both were 22. Your 2x great grandparents, John Bird and Elizabeth Ellen Lloyd - John and Elizabeth Ellen and their family appear on the 1911 census at 153 Oldham Road in Miles Platting in North Manchester. John was born 1870 in Miles Platting, and was a heald varnisher. Elizabeth Ellen was born 1870 in Middleton. Their children included (birth dates from parish records): Gertrude born 20 February 1899 Miles Platting Fred born 8 August 1901 Newton Heath (he died 1969 in Ashton) Bertha b 30 July 1903 Newton Heath William b 24 November 1905 Newton Heath Maggie (officially named Margaret Victoria) b 17 April 1908 Miles Platting Frank b 1910 Miles Platting. Also with them was Elizabeth Ellen's father, Robert Lloyd, who was born 1843 in Holywell, Flintshire, Wales; he was a retired cooper. Elizabeth indicated that she had borne 8 children, of whom 6 were still living. The parish records show two children born before Gertrude: John born 8 November 1893 in Miles Platting, and Mabel born 26 April 1896 in Miles Platting. (The above Gertrude is the one who married Frank Flavell (b 1897, son of John Henry Flavell) on 9 August 1924 at St Luke Miles Platting.) In the 1901 census, John and Elizabeth Ellen Bird have two children - Mabel 4 and Gertrude 2. John was a reed maker for the cotton mill. Your 3x great grandparents, Samuel Bird and Martha Taylor - John Bird, born 1870 in Manchester, was the son of Samuel Bird, born 1841 Manchester, chimney sweeper. Samuel Bird and Martha Taylor married in Manchester in December 1862, and their children included: William Henry Bird, born 1861 WIthington. Edward Bird, born 1864 Manchester John Bird born 1870 Manchester. In the 1891 census, Samuel and son John are living at 153 Oldham Road. John's occupation is reed maker. In 1881, at 159 Oldham Street, the household includes: Samuel b 1841 Manchester, chimney sweep Martha b. 1831 Manchester (wife) William Henry b. 1851, iron driller. Edward, b 1864, chimney sweep John b 1870, scholar In 1871, Samuel was a porter on the railway. Your 4x great grandparents, Samuel and Elizabeth Bird: Samuel Bird born 1840 seems to have been the son of Samuel and Elizabeth Bird, who were born somewhere around 1809-1811 in Manchester. Samuel's occupation was dyer. In the 1841 census, their household includes: Henry Bird, baptized 15 December 1833 Manchester. He married Elizabeth Beverley (father Richard) on 21 Dec. 1851 in Manchester, when they were both 19. He seems to have married again, this time to Ellen Parsonage Partington on 10 Feb. 1861 in Manchester. Sarah Bird, born about 1837 Lancashire Samuel Bird, who was baptized 9 August 1840 at Manchester parish church. In 1861, the family was at 8 Meridian Street in Ardwick. The census lists: Samuel Bird, b ca 1809 Manchester, dyer. Elizabeth (wife) b 1809 St Helens. Elizabeth b. 1844 Manchester, cotton weaver Margaret b 1846 Manchester, doffer James b 1851 Manchester, scholar. Unfortunately I can't find a record of Elizabeth's maiden name. They married before civil registration began, and I don't see their marriage in Lancashire Online Parish Clerk. If you want to track marriages, births and deaths to your ancestors, some useful resources are: FreeBMD, which after 1911 lets you do parent searches by entering the two surnames; Lancashire BMD, which lists BMD after 1837 and in which volunteers are gradually entering mother's maiden name for births; Lancashire Online Parish Clerk, which definitely has a great many Birds although not necessarily yours; and the Manchester marriages and births databases on Ancestry. Good luck with your searching! Kind regards, Rosemary Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. UPDATE: I am now fairly certain that the Elizabeth KIRBY who married Edward CRANGLE is the daughter of William KIRBY and Ellen BROWN. This makes her my 5th cousin, twice removed. The other Elizabeth KIRBY who married Thomas SLATER is the daughter of William KIRBY and Sarah LEYTHAM, whom David found on the 1851 census. Thanks again for all the assistance!!! 2. Vern Prescott via
    3. Thanks David, Jim and Lynn David, the 1851 and 1841 families you found are different families. The Elizabeth, daughter of William and Sarah is a possibility although I think she was born in Lancaster, rather than Preston. She was also born about 1832. The more likely candidate is the Elizabeth born in 1837 to William and Ellen (nee Brown) Kirby. The problem is that I already have this Elizabeth married to Thomas Slater. It does appear that I have the wrong Elizabeth married to Thomas Slater because she gives her father as William Kirby, Farmer! However, I still need to get the marriage record to determine whether Elizabeth's father was William and what his occupation was. I might have to purchase the certificate! Lynn, Elizabeth Kirby was baptised at St John's, the Parish Church, which I think would be why it just says Parish of Preston on the Baptism page. Vern

    2. David Wightmore via
    3. Hi Vern, Looking at the census, Elizabeth KIRBY was 24 in 1861, so born 1837-ish. In the 1851 census, there is a 13 year-old Elizabeth KIRBY living with her father William (45, Labourer), mother Sarah (46), two older and three younger siblings at 3 Christ Church Place in Preston, Lancs. The reference for this page is HO107/2265/40/33. I also have the 1841 census page for the KIRBY family. The mother is Ellen, not Sarah, but the first four children are the same. I also have the 1851 CRANGLE family in Kendall, Westmoreland, and they were all born in Ireland. This is not in agreement with the 1861 census which says he is from Croston, Lancs. However, in 1871, 1881 and 1891, he is from Ireland again... Elizabeth passes in 1887 at 49, and Edward passes in 1893 at 58. I suspect that the CRANGLE family showed up in England post-1841, as they do not show up in that census. Drop me a line at dvdwmore(at)telus(dot)net and let me know if you want any of these pages; they will be sent soonest. hth David
