    3. Hi Sue, Where were your Dugdales from please? I have just researched an important Dugdale family who originated in Great Harwood but moved to Blackburn and owned a large house in which I later worked. The owner was a Thomas Dugdale, he became Mayor of Blackburn twice, as did one of his sons. Thomas's father was Nathaniel Dugdale. 3. Looking for family and information about James Brassgirdle and wife Alice. James and Alice had a son Matthew, born at St Nicholas Liverpool in 1782, Richard 1784, Mary Ann 1786 and Alice 1788. I can find no further records of this family in Liverpool, no records of burials, marriages, etc. The mystery is that the Belfast Irish Bracegirdles had a Matthew Bracegirdle, allegedly born somewhere about 1785, (Bracegirdle being one of those surnames who have many different spellings over the years) whose parentage is unknown. Irish records being what they are it does not surprise me. However, that being said, my family has a genetic link to the Bracegirdle family of Ireland but at present no clue as to where the link is. Matthew (the Irish one) could be the link between them, the discrepancy in dates is possibly understandable. There is a hint by an earlier researcher that the family did come from Liverpool (a later member lived there and was married at the same church, now a Bracegirdle rather than a Brassgirdle). James Brassgirdle was a Tallow Chandler. Could this imply that he came from a family who had access to tallow - a farming or butchers lot? These years were just before candles etc went out of fashion and tallow as superseded by other methods. Any clues or links to present day family in Liverpool and Lancashire greatly appreciated. 3. Funnily enough I have had a major breakthrough due to dna:-) Whilst talking on the 'phone to my newly found cousin I mentioned that MY grandmother described herself as 'Lady Clerk' on the 1911 census, adding that I'd always wondered where she learned typing and shorthand in Liverpool. To my surprise cousin said HIS grandmother was very proud of being one of the first typists in Liverpool. Both ladies were born around 1888. Could anyone suggest where these lassies might have trained? Was there a Pitman College or similar in the city in the early 1900's? Best wishes, Ruth.
