    3. Hello All, In my search to help with the ABRAHAMS family SAMUEL ABRAHAMS 35 yrs. and wife MARY 30 yrs. are living in BOLTON in 1841. His occupation is given as a Hardware Dealer. He dies 1849 in Nantwich, Cheshire. He states he was not born in Lancashire. But married Bolton-le-Moors 1830 unfortunately No Cert. with parents named. Spouse Mary Ann Cockyene. Although I am on Ancestry I cannot find a Directory or Rates book for the period 1831-1848 in Bolton which may list this man or his occupation during the years. It is believed his Father was a MARCUS ABRAHAMS a Tailor of Germany and Manchester. No proof available. Would like to be able to trace his family during this period if possible or even find a Marriage in 1830 which lists parents. With thanks for any assistance, Cheers, Robyn --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. https://www.avast.com/antivirus

Hi Robyn, In the Baines & Pigot Directory from 1822 -1841 Marcus Abrahams is a Clothes Broker living at 43 Hanging Ditch, Manchester and Samuel is also a clothes broker living at 58 Thomas’s Street, Manchester. In Pigots 1828-1829 they are listed side by side with Marcus still at 43 Hanging Ditch and Samuel at 4 Withy Grove, Manchester. In the Pigots 1835-1841 Samuel is a Fishmonger in the Market. 3. thank you to all you computer savvy people , unfortunately I am not . grgr But glad to know i will not need to throw my disc's away -there is hope . I have been sent the contact details for S & N Archives . I found when comparing my family records with on line Ancestry to the disc's often either missed or strange spellings . My husbands LONGWORTH became when transcribed something very Polish looking luckily I had a copy from the film when I viewed many yrs ago . The original film is on Ancestry it is the transcribing that is so wrong . I have corrected . Interestingly I have been helping two students from the High School next to my retirement Village who have been given a project to 'Do ' someone's tree . the teacher who suggested this I can only assume has watched the Ancestry programme and thinks one only needs an hr . The students from Sth Africa not a bit familiar with the UK found this a struggle even had difficulty reading old documents . The tree they were trying to compile of a resident who equally knew nothing about research had not given the students enough information to work on . So a big dis appointment to very enthusiastic young people . I spent time explaining what they should be seeing and looking for . The students were limited to the time they could spend with me because of those fellows ' " Health and Safety " ???? can only guess insurance if they are off site . kind regards to all . Shirley please excuse my spelling going blind in one eye . the cataract op worked but vision sadly is deteriorating

    3. Looking on Wonkypedia, they seem to have started the canal from that side so the canal would be there. The brewery website describes it as a 1750s pub so must have been built with the canal. The Kings Arm in the village looks as if it could be a similar age. Was "Black a Moor Lady" in Downholland an Inn? It is shown as a building on the 1st Edition OS Map and there is now a Black a Moor Lane. 3. A good source of data which is easily overlooked is LANCAT - the electronic catalogue of Lancashire Archives. You can search the Archives at: http://archivecat.lancashire.gov.uk/CalmView/default.aspx. If your ancestor was a publican he may have had a brush with the law in which case you might find a reference to him in the Quarter Sessions records. While LANCAT is an index to the documents they hold, it can be a good way to quickly search on names and locations. This is a reference I found for Haskayne : http://archivecat.lancashire.gov.uk/CalmView/Record.aspx?src=CalmView.Catalog&id=DDSC%2f129%2f20&pos=100 though a search for "Haskayne" didn't locate it, I was looking through the results for "Downholland". I'm a bit confused about the Ship Inn - it stands on the Leed-Liverpool Canal and would seem a likely place for an ex-boatman. The problem is that it is alleged to date from ~1750 but work on the Leed-Liverpool did not commence until 5 November 1770. Also the term "ship" does not fit well with a canal. It may be that if the date is correct the present route of the canal was previously a navigable river. I've looked at Yates map of 1786 but the map is in sections and Haskayne is on a join and it's impossible to tell if there is a river there. Are you aware of the website that deals with Boat Families of the Leeds-Liverpool canal and related waterways : http://www.boatfamilies.website/index.php there seem to be a few Prescotts of Haskayne documented there.
