    1. [LAN] MLFHS Bolton & District FHS meeting Wednesday August 2nd
    2. Lynne
    3. The next meeting of the Bolton & District FHS will be held on Wednesday August 2nd. Barry Mills will be speaking about "Conscientious Objectors in Bolton and district in World War 1" including: 1. Attitudes to War In Bolton in 1914 and 1917 2. Conscription and Tribunals - How They Worked 3. Conscientious Objector (CO) Statistics – National and Local, CO 'Hotspots', including Westhoughton 4. Quaker COs 5. Other Christian COs 6. Socialist COs 7. Local Organisations Supporting COs 8. Aftermath – what happened to COs later, anti-war sentiments 1920-1939 Although this talk centres around Bolton and district, Barry Mills' research on Military Service Tribunals has extended more widely to South East Lancashire. The experiences of some individual COs will be discussed, the most dramatic being that of the Bolton Quaker Charles Bayliss Abbatt, who was rescued from a torpedoed hospital ship off the Isle of Wight, and lived on Darwen Road for much of his later life. Barry undertook this subject as a personal research project when he retired from being a librarian at Bolton Central Library. As Local Studies Librarian and later Archives and Local Studies Team Leader he was very involved with the Archives collection, working with colleagues who were Archivists. He has found quite a bit of information not readily available elsewhere and this talk should be quite revealing on what is still a very sensitive subject. The venue as usual is upstairs at the Bolton Old Links Golf Club, Chorley Old Road, Bolton BL1 5SU. The evening will start at 7.30pm with tea and coffee available from 7pm. All are welcome with a small charge for non-MLFHS members. The usual Help Desk and stationery sales will be available. All enquiries to Barbara Owen on 01204309515 or [email protected] And don't forget . . . Bolton Family History Help Desk Visit the new History Centre on the first Saturday of every month, 9.30am to 12pm, where members of Bolton Family History Society will be available with advice on how to trace your family tree. No need to book, just come along.

    3. Hi Meg Unfortunately, the archive search function seems to be broken. Now we need to go to the list's archives and browse by date. Once a month is selected, the browser search function can be used. Maybe if list subscribers complain enough about things like the broken archive search, RootsWeb and Ancestry staff will start fixing things. One can always dream! It is only based on the witness on the marriage cert of son. They marry in 3rd quarter 1874, they then disappear. Son John Walton is supposedly born on 13 June 1874 in Burton upon Trent and  is found on the 1901 census as a boarder aged 27. (this is from a researcher in UK) On John’s marriage in 1905 to Mary Elizabeth Deakin he lists his father as Joseph Walton, ex grocer, deceased. An Annie Maria Walton is a witness on the certificate, although the person he is living with in 1901. Children for John and Mary are born in Wigan.after 1905. I would appreciate any help on moving forward with this tree.  I really need to find Joseph, wife and son John on the 1881, 1891, 1901 census but am having no luck. 3. >From Bolton & District FHS branch of MLFHS: Wednesday 5th July 7.30pm Peter Braun, National Trust volunteer, will talk about Monarchy & Dunham Massey Hall. This is an illustrated talk about the Hall and its occupiers. We can promise a good evening, and a brilliant, and humorous overview of the comings and goings over the last 300 years of the Hall’s various residents involving some political intrigue, wheeling and dealing in marriages, and family liaisons. If you think life is complicated now, think again. If you have Booths, Greys, Fittons, Masseys , Venables, or Traffords in your family line perhaps you have a connection? We are confident that the true stories, will be well beyond anything you see in any television drama. There will also be a raffle for two signed books by David Casserly, "Massacre, The Storming of Bolton" (from last months talk). Tea and coffee, and a stationery desk will be available from 7pm, and a Help Desk offered before and after for genealogical enquiries. Free to members of the Manchester and Lancashire FHS, for which we are your local branch, and a nominal charge for non-members unless joining on the night. Come and try us out. Montserrat Room, 1st Floor, Old Links Golf Club, Chorley Old Road, Bolton, BL1 5SU. All enquiries to Barbara Owen secretary on [email protected] or 01204309515 Don't forget we also have the Help Desk at the History Centre Bolton Central Library this Saturday morning 9.30am to 12 noon. http://www.bolton.mlfhs.org.uk

    1. [LAN] Bracegirdles and modern genetics
    2. Julie Tadman
    3. Looking for Bracegirdles to take part in DNA testing trying to trace the origins of the family. The first step is a YDNA test of selected males in a family tree to see how far back we can link families, with mitacondrial and at dna tests also welcome (the latter called the Family Finder). Please contact me, even if you are not interested, as you may fit into someones Bracegirdle family tree. Julie Tadman at [email protected]

    1. Re: [LAN] Isaac Hill
    2. This is on the UK Ancestry site Isaac Hill UK, Coal Mining Accidents and Deaths Index, 1700-1950 Name: Isaac Hill Birth Year: abt 1830 Event Type: Death Event Year: 1857 Death Age: 27 Death Date: 13 Jan 1857 Death Place: Stockport, Cheshire, England Occupation: Miner Colliery: Whaley Bridge Owner: F.G. Gisborne Notes: Fall of roof. URL: http://www.cmhrc.co.uk/site/da... Unfortunately the link is to the old site which is sadly no longer working but it might give you a bit more to go on and possibly look up in Newspapers. Have you tried the 'Waveback Machine' (I think its called), which allow you to view old cached websites? I guess there would also have been an inquest but they are hard to get and often don't survive. Meg Galley-Taylor [email protected] -----Original Message----- From: LANCSGEN [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Linda Sent: 26 June 2017 02:55 To: [email protected] Subject: [LAN] Isaac Hill Isaac Hill, born in Manchester or Stockport, Cheshire in 1828 to Matthew & Ann Hill, married Emma Jones in 1852 and had a daughter, Alice in 1853 and a son, Samuel in 1855.  I have been unable to find anything on him or his family after that date.  There is another Isaac & Emma in Barrow in Furness that I can trace from 1841 to 1901 who can't be the right one as my Isaac can be found in Ardwick, Manchester in 1841.  Isaac Hill is a much more common name that I would have thought but I don't find any likely records in UK or on manifests for my Isaac.  After searching for months, today I found an Isaac Hill in a mining accident in Whaley Bridge in 1857.  This seems like a good reason for my not finding other records after this date, but it doesn't give enough information for me to be able to be sure this is the right Isaac.  Can anyone please tell me where I might find more informaion on this mining accident.  I used to have a link for mining accidents, but it doesn't work anymore.  A death certificate wouldn't give his parent's names.   This indicates his death in Stockport but he also lived up to at least 1855 in Ardwick. Cheshire BMD has nothing I can find and Cheshire OPC seems to be a dead link.  I find nothing on his wife, Emma, or children, Alice & Samuel after this date.  In 1841 he was a cotton piecer, at the time of his marriage and when his children were born he was a brewer, so mining was not his normal occupation.
