    1. [LAN] Talk in Colne: "Why Did The French Mutiny In 1917?" Wed Nov 15
    2. Colin Spiller
    3. The next meeting of Pendle and Burnley Branch of Lancashire Family History & Heraldry Society will be on Wednesday 15th November when the subject will be  "Why Did The French Mutiny In 1917?", given by Richard Wimpenny, in the meeting room at Colne Library, starting at 7.30pm - doors open at 7pm. All welcome. The meeting room is upstairs but there is a lift. The address is Market Street, Colne, Lancashire, BB8 0AP General Robert Nivelle, the new French "whizz-kid," promised total victory in a matter of days.  Why was Lloyd George so taken with him that, off his own bat, he promised to second the British Army under direct French control for the rest of the war? Nivelle's failure resulted in a mutiny in his own army.  Where did this leave the British War effort, and where did it leave the relationship between the generals running the war, and the country's political leaders? All will be revealed on Wednesday! Please note: Colne Library closes at 6pm. The meeting room is accessed via the rear entrance by the car park which is free in the evenings. See the website http://www.lfhhs-pendleandburnley.org.uk for further information. -- Colin Spiller [email protected]

    3. Thanks to Anne, Mary Lou & Martin for your kind responses and suggestions, it seems that between you my little problem has been solved. I can now focus my attention much better, especially as it appears Popithorne and Thatch Leach were, as hoped, quite close to each other. Thanks again folk, much appreciated. 3. Do a search on a mapping site like Google Maps and you find a Poppythorne Lane in present day Prestwich. Go to the NLS maps. Their earliest 25" map is 1890s, that shows the road but seems built over. But go to the 6" maps and you can get a 1842 6" map, that shows a building called Poppy Thorn. It looks quite a large house rather than just a farm. http://maps.nls.uk/view/102344057#zoom=6&lat=4882&lon=3358&layers=BT Perhaps later a nursery? Manchester Courier and Lancashire General Advertiser - Saturday 26 October 1844 Image © THE BRITISH LIBRARY BOARD. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. At the New Bailey Court, on Tuesday last, John Scholes, an extensive florist, of longe-lane, near Middleton. was charged with having on the Tuesday evening previous trespassed in the garden of Mr. J. Middleton, florist, Poppy Thorn, Prestwich, and taken plants to the value'of from to £20.—Sergeant White, of the county police stationed at Middleton, found upwards of sixty of the plants under the beds in the prisoner's house.—Scholes pleaded guilty, and was convicted in the penalty of £5 and costs; and the plants were restored to Mr. Middleton. Hi Barrie, Poppythorn Lane and Thatch Leach Lane (near Besses o' th' Barn) are still very much alive and living either side of the M62 not far from Heaton Park, the old Poppythorn  is nearer to the Parish church of St. Mary so maybe worth looking at the history around there. Hello again Everyone, I have been off line for a while but now I am looking for information on the above person who was a nurse and I think she may have been in the Queen Alexanders Nursing Corp. She was born in Ireland circa 1925/27 and came from the area of Moate, Westmeath, Eire. She worked in the Cheshire area and also in Liverpool area. I have an address of Oakhill Nurses Association which may give someone a clue. I have a photo of her in her nurses uniform. She was a very good friend of my mums Thanks for reading this and I would love to pass a copy of the photo onto her family if I can locate them. Ginny

    1. [LAN] Obituary - Finney(Dyson), Rita
    2. Bill Cook
    3. The Cape Breton Post, Sydney, Nova Scotia, October 26, 2017 Rita Dyson Finney It is with great sadness and sorrow we announce the death of my dear mother, Rita Dyson-Finney, at the age of 92, after a lengthy illness on Tuesday, October 24, 2017 at the Northside Guest Community Guest Home where she resided for the past four years. Born in Leigh, Lancashire, England on July 11, 1925, Rita was the only child of the late Thomas and Rita (Walker) Dyson. Rita’s mom died at a very young age and many years later her dad Thomas remarried Rose (Causing) Dyson. Rita came to Canada in 1945, as a young war bride of George Edward Finney of Sydney Mines. Rita kept in touch with many other war brides over the years and they met on a regular basis until many were too old or had passed away themselves. Over the years mom kept herself busy working at Harbourview Hospital as a practical nurse for 18 ½ years and then did some volunteer work at both the Northside General Hospital and the Northside Community Guest Home. Mom also taught many older people who could not read, using the program Each One, Teach One. She was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 8, in Sydney Mines until her illness took over. She also loved and belonged to the Children’s Wish Foundation in the very beginning and the Canadian Cancer Society. Mom was a member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney. Leaving to grieve her loss is her only child, Moya Finney-Marsh and son-in-law, Ted Marsh, her two grandsons, Paul Marsh, living in London, England and Adam Marsh, living in Red Deer, Alberta. Mom cherished her two grandsons deeply. Also dear to her was Adam’s wife, Maria Bayona-Marsh and their two children, Vincent and Ty Nathaniel. Meeting her great-grandchildren was so surreal for Mom. Besides her parents, Rita was predeceased by her husband, George Edward Finney. There will be no visitation, cremation has taken place. A funeral service and celebration of Rita’s life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 4, 2017 at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church with Rev. Julio Martin officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall. Burial will take place a later date. Memorial donations may be made to St. John Anglican Church Fund, the Children’s Wish Foundation, the S.PC.A. or the Canadian Cancer Society. Online condolences may be sent to www.wjdooley.com.

    3. I haven't used the PDF format yet this time, but the last trial they had about a year ago, I got many of them. If you want to frame a certificate, they aren't the same, but if you mainly want the information, they are just as good as the full certificate. It is basically the same certificate with the top cut off. It has all the information in the boxes in those same boxes. It was well worth it to me to get the cheaper price. I plan to order more as soon as I can make up my list. Linda in USA On Fri, 13 Oct 2017 13:29:50 -0400 (GMT-04:00), Lynne wrote: Hi Valerie If anyone on the list uses this new service, I hope you'll write to the list and tell us about the experience and whether or not you're satisfied with the PDF format.

    2. Lynne
    3. The General Register Office (GRO) for England and Wales is piloting a service beginning 12 October 2017 to provide portable document format (PDF) copies of digitised historical birth and death records. The pilot will run for a minimum of 3 months to enable GRO to assess the demand for this service over a prolonged period. The PDF scheme provides a cheaper alternative to ordering print certificates, which cost £9.25 each or £23.40 for priority certificates. Applications for each PDF cost £6, must be made online, and include a GRO index reference. England and Wales records which are available as PDFs in this extended pilot include: Births: 1837 –1916 Deaths: 1837 –1957 https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp
