    1. [LAN] MILLER of Ulnes Walton
    2. Ruth Wright
    3. I'm researching the MILLER family of Ulnes Walton from about 1700 to 1800. William MILLER's children included William, John, Thomas, Humphrey, Jane & Rachel- all born between 1713 & 1726. The son John (my line) married Jane ?? and had Margaret, Richard, Jane, John & Henry- all born between 1742 & 1755. The Millers were buried in either St. Andrews Church, Leyland or St. Michael & All Angels, Croston. Does anyone know if there are any MI's for these churches? Thanks, Ruth, Ontario,Canada

    2. Nora Kevan
    3. Hello Michael Keeping a mangle was a common occupation for widows with no other means of supporting their families. Two of my great grandmothers were in such a case. My grandmother, Sarah Allerton was 6 months old when her father died and she was the youngest of six girls under 10. They all took their turn helping their mother turn the handle of the mangle. This was not the type usually seen in Victorian homes. with two upright rollers but a box mangle. I have a picture of one in a book called "Women's Work is never done. It shows a large heavy table with a box on rollers on top filled with large stones. It was used for 'ironing' linen tablecloths and sheets as these were not hot ironed but mangled while wet The linen would have come from hotels, boarding houses and wealthy private homes. . I know little about my maternal gt grandmother except this was her occupation on the census but I have many tales about my Allerton grandmother nee Ellen Guy. The family attended St. Mary's Walton on the Hill and the congregation made a collection for her. The church offered to buy her a small annuity to keep the family until the daughters were old enough to walk but she rejected this as charity and asked for the money to be used to buy the mangle. She also had a lodger, which was another honest way of supplementing her income. Regards, Nora. -----Original Message----- Regards, Nora From: Michael Green Sent: Tuesday, November 05, 2013 7:37 PM To: lancsgen@rootsweb.com Subject: [LAN] Humorous occupation Just a little light relief. One of my forebears, Margaret FOSTER (then GREEN, then FOSTER again, but née ARMSTRONG) was, towards the end of her life, in lodgings at 47 Bradford Rd, New Cross, Manchester. Aged 67, she was still working as a “cotton baller”. I would have liked to have met her landlady, a Warrington lass by the name of Hannah BOWELING. Hannah clearly had a large twinkle in her eye and delightfully describes her occupation simply as “with a mangle”. I don’t suppose “mangler” would have given the right idea. 1. [LAN] Occupation humour
    2. Eric Millward
    3. Years ago before all the censuses were online I was looking up an ancestor on fiche in the local library . When I found him he was listed on the fiche as "Public Nuisance" ... obviously one of my family!. Noticing a + sign at the end of the line I asked the librarian what it meant and she explained that the + sign meant that there was more information about his occupation on the original because the text fields on the fiche were limited in size. So I looked at the microfilm version and, sure enough, it said "Public Nuisance and Sanitation Worker". Eric Millward ----- No virus found in this message. We have Joseph's marriage cert which gives his father's name as Samuel but I think you're right - that he was born under a different name. There were apparently 2 more brothers and all 4 were known to have been made to learn a trade by their father mainly in the docks area of Liverpool. 1. [LAN] St Chad RC Church - Whittle le Woods
    2. T. Wood
    3. Is there anyone on this list with experience using the records from St. Chad Catholic Church, Whittle le Woods?  From the information on Genuki I know some of the records have been microfilmed. I am trying to locate christenings for 5 of the 6 children of Thomas and Jane Holm who lived along the Walton Summit branch of the Leeds and Liverpool canal in the early 1800’s. The youngest child, Ellen was christened at St. Joseph Catholic church in Brindle in 1811 but the other children, John born about 1803, Ann about 1804, Thomas about 1806, Margaret about 1807 and Daniel about 1809 do not show up in the St. Joseph records. Based on where I estimate that they were living at the time, they would have been about 2 ½ miles from St. Chad, which would have been the closest Catholic church to them. If anyone has access to the St. Chad records and could take a look for any of these children I would appreciate it.

    3. There are some good ones around Such as in 1911 Herbert Arthur Moore 38 165 Ellesmere Street Farnworth Occupation: Jack Of All Trades (that used to be a common expression but you don't seem to hear it much of late) There again some occupations are not always what they seem to be on first sight The descendants of George MAULEY 46 living in Cheshire in 1911 must have been quite shocked if they found him transcribed on Ancestry as "Hangman" in a Milk Factory But perhaps reassured when they found he was actually a "Dairyman" instead William WHITTAM 45 living in Shoreditch in 1911 fared no better His relatives may have been somewhat surprised (I am sure it would be noose to them :-) to find him in 1911 as a job sharing "Blacksmith, Hangman" But probably calmed when they found in his wavy handwriting that he was in fact a "Blacksmiths Hammerman" Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 05/11/2013 09:50, sandra.bev@talktalk.net wrote: > > Some years ago I came across a census entry [alas I didn't keep the > record] that gave the wife as head of the house, occupation 'mangle > woman'. 1. [LAN] Crook Family
    2. Tony Spendel
    3. Hello, I have a family of Crooks (ho ho) on the 1911 census at 8 Dean Street, Bolton, Lancashire. Does anyone have any of these in their family tree? With the same family at the census were Jordans from Wrexham. Mary Jordan nee Allmand/Hallmond is proving very difficult to trace between 1881 and 1911. Mary Jordan has her daughter Emma Jordan in Wigan in 1890; who marries John William Crook in Holy Trinity Church Bolton 8 Aug 1909 where their address is given as 8 Bk. Ormrod Street. William Jordan (Emma's brother) returns to Wrexham and marries. He has 4 children but he dies young as does his wife. The children are split up and sent to live with their grans. Two are sent to Bolton: Emily Jordan and Patrick (Paddy) Jordan. Looks to me like Emily married John Edge in Bolton Q4 1941 and she died in December 2002. Possible son David Edge b Q4 1944 Bolton. Looks like Patrick married Dorothy Booth in Horwich Q1 1950 and died Bolton 1960. Any help gratefully received. Tony
