Author: TBERRY1972 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.lan.general/52566.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Whitesfan, Thanks for your reply. Thanks, I have that info, it is mainly trying to trace the Berry side back as far as I can. Irish records are murder to find to start with, but as I don't know where the family originated from, its impossible to trace back. Berry is a really common name in Ireland too. James Berry who lived at 329 Darwen Rd had no children, so its not as if there could be a chance of a relative still living there. The two twins, James and John may have gone on to have children of their own, but I dont have any details for them. All I know is that they lived in the Bromley Cross area. Dad has always said Bromley Cross is a lovely area, Im surprised we didn't end up living there too! Thanks again, I think at the moment I am grasping at straws a bit, but you never know, someone may know of the family. Kind regards, Tom. Author: TBERRY1972 Surnames: Berry Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.lan.general/52566.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Sue, Thanks for your reply. The surname McCondell is a misprint, it should really be McConnell. I have a copy of the marriage cert, and it says McCondell on there too. But, looking on other family docs I have, and census records, it is definately McConnell. I think She or her husband may of had quite a strong accent, or that the minister who conducted the wedding was a bit deaf, and misheard her! lol. The main query for my post is the Thomas Berry born Ireland. I am just hoping that someone out there knows the family in and around the Bolton area, and if so, they may be able to furnish me with other details on that side of the family. Thomas' Father was named John Berry, as per marriage cert, but I have no other details for him, or his wife. Thanks again though, at least you have been kind enough to read this. Tom. 3. This is sad news indeed. I have used the Talbot on several occasions and it is an invaluable resource for family historians containing, as it does, material that simply is not held anywhere else. The staff there were also knowledgeable and eager to help with any query. There must, surely, be some plan to move the stock to another accessible archive - Lancashire Records Office and the Harris immediately spring to mind. See their web site at http://www.liverpool-genealogy.org.uk/ for more information including scheduled meetings. It would be a good idea to edit your subject line and message body to make it clear who you are researching: is it the CARTER surname (always wise to put surnames in all caps) or are you researching the occupation of carter? In any case, please add to your message a little of the information you already have, including full names and event dates. It's likely someone here or on the LancsGen mailing list, to which this board is gatewayed, will be able to help you. You might also consider joining the very helpful Liverpool mailing list (see http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/ENG/ENG-LIVERPOOL.html for information and subscription links). 2. Jim Lancaster
    3. SAD NEWS FROM THE NORTH WEST. The Bishop of Lancaster has decided that the Talbot Library in Preston, which has been a much-prized repository of Roman Catholic literature and artefacts for more than 20 years, is to close on December 31st. The loss will be greatly felt by many people researching Catholic history and by students from the nearby University of Central Lancashire. It also has a significant collection of Irish material. Because the annual Christmas closure had already been scheduled, the Library will be effectively closed from FRIDAY DECEMBER 13th. Sad news indeed Jim Lancaster (Bury, Lancs.)

The index details for the image in "Border Crossings: From Canada to U.S., 1895-1956" are Name: Wm Hulley Arrival Date: Dec 1907 Port of Arrival: Montreal, Quebec, Canada Residence Country: Canada Age: 46 Birth Date: abt 1861 Birth Country: England Gender: Male Race/Nationality: English Record Type: Manifests Line Number: 7 The Border Crossings database contains "an index of aliens and citizens crossing into the U.S. from Canada via various ports of entry along the U.S.-Canadian border between 1895 and 1956." I have clipped William Hulley's column for "Name and address of nearest relative or friend in country whence alien came." Plus, to assist in handwriting recognition, the entries above and below - 3 in total. Can the original poster please confirm this is the correct image? And if anyone else can think what this address might be in the meantime... Knowing how immigration officials have trouble understanding accents, I wonder if it is an attempt at "Bridgwater", when it's pronounced without the "t"...????
