Thanks for the link - such sad reading! The Talbot was a vital repository of Catholic history in the North West and contained many items unavailable elsewhere. I have used it several times over the past decade during the course of my research into my own and other Catholic families and the staff were always knowledgeable and helpful. What is really scandalous is the apparent refusal to consider any other alternatives, nor allow any time for consultation or consideration of the options. To effect closure because one person is retiring and the heating bills have been going up is simply ridiculous and totally unacceptable. I am lost for words and feeling very angry. It's too bad they couldn't open just in the summer if heating costs too much. They could at least have give several months notice so that anyone who needed something could have made one last trip.

Just found via the inbound record for Catherine Colbert (Michael's sister) that it was indeed Eleanor Fisher that he departed from. I imagine a few others who came over from Liverpool did as well. I know from his marriage certificate that his father was John Whalley. The first information I can find of him is his marriage in 1856 to Mary Ann Lowden in Crosthwaite near Kendal. I cannot find him on any census until 1861 when he was living at Emerald Bank, Above Derwent, Cumberland. Sometimes there surname is down as Waller. I am also trying to find out who his mother was and if he had any brothers of sisters. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
