I'm a Titterington. A brief history: My grandfather Edward Titterington was shot in the back and killed by a German sniper during WW1. He was one of the engineers who planted those huge underground mines under the German trenches in order to shorten the war. You can see the story on HISTORY CHANEL. It was immediately after one mission and while retreating to his camp that an enemy sniper shot him in the back. He was 47 year's old. Quite old for such a hard task. He is buried in France. Some of the images can be quite poor but the vast majority are quite readable. I recently managed to complete a full years study of the local Petty Sessions through this very source. If it happened in Chorley, any case would have first been held before the Chorley Petty Sessions prior to committal at Preston Quarter sessions or Lancaster Assizes. My study though, was for 1890, so not much use in this case. If you are near enough though eworld_2, I would certainly look at the Chorley Guardian's for the years concerned rather than Lancashire Records Office. You wouldn't need to look through the entire paper as the proceedings of the Petty Sessions had their own section of the newspaper each week, and the paper was only between 8-10 pages long back then. You just need patience and a keen eye. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. ". . .the number of entries in the index has just slipped past the eighteen million mark." What a fantastic achievement! I'm sure you all join me in thanking Lancashire BMD volunteers, including John Marsden and Ian Hartas. If you'd care to send a personal message of thanks to this terrific team, please go to <http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/index.php?form_action=contact&county=lancashire> Lynne -----Forwarded Message----- >From: UKBMD Announcement from Lancashire <UKBMDNews@ukbmd.org.uk> >Sent: Dec 24, 2013 10:54 AM > >Message from John Marsden, Lancashire. > >LancashireBMD is now celebrating its twelfth Christmas and showing little sign of slowing down. As 2013 draws to a close, the number of entries in the index has just slipped past the eighteen million mark. Indexing is ongoing in virtually every register office in the county, so 2014 looks like it will be another year of great progress. > >I would like to thank all of the team leaders and volunteers who have contributed to this impressive achievement during the past year. It is through their enthusiasm and dedication that this project continues to advance year-on-year. > >Thanks too are due to Ian Hartas, who created the BMD software which drives this and other sites and who has a big part in getting the data onto the system. Ian has been a great support whenever problems have arisen and particularly recently when the site moved (almost undetectably) onto a new server. > >A final thanks is owed to the users. The site is well used and we receive encouraging feedback which helps to motivate all concerned. A special thanks to those who have reported apparent errors. We would rather they did not happen in the first place, but your reports help us to continually improve the data quality. It may seem to take an age at times, but they all get checked and amended when errors are confirmed. > >So best wishes to all for Christmas and new year > >John >Webmaster LancashireBMD > > >For access to all the UK's major BMD and Census sites visit http://www.UKBMD.org.uk/ >For access to all the UK's major Family History sites visit http://www.UKGDL.org.uk/ >For access to all the UK's major Military Family History sites visit http://www.UKMFH.org.uk/ >
