Hi all advice please on looking up people on the electoral roll (in Genes reunited.) when I ask for a name eg Norman Holmes, it finds a very large number and won't use middle names or initials. However it gives you the full names of the people at the same address eg Mark B Holmes and Murgatroyd John Holmes Is there a secret to the electoral roll and is that the only place to look? regards Marg OLeary Port Stephens NSW

I can trace Ernest up until the 1901 census and then he disappears. The family lived in Oldham. On the 1911 census his wife Elizabeth isn't described as a widow but he doesn't appear on any record. I can find his siblings and his father in 1911. I can find no death records, I have searched variations of his name. I have looked for hospital records on the 1911 census but haven't been able to find any for Oldham. I have also searched records for America etc in case he emigrated. Any suggestions welcome! Hi Meg Findmypast and Genesreunited are one and the same company so use the same data but may be presented / searched in slightly differing ways Both get their data from 192.com as far as I know (I would agree with your comment on GR) Despite having an option to search by variant forenames it doesn't work as it should In theory the 2002 - 2013 electoral rolls are available to full UK & worldwide subscriptions (but to the .co.uk site) I have the so called worldwide .com version which does not include the electoral rolls above So for the original poster, you may find a library or LDS FHS has access to it Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 15/01/2014 13:31, Magdalen Galley-Taylor wrote: > I have just checked by looking myself up - not a very good example as I have > opted out of the printed register for the last 10 years - and it looks as if > you can't specify a second name on FMP (but it's only for 2002 -2013 plus an > historic Cheshire one) and whilst you can on Ancestry they only have a very > limited number of historic electoral rolls available to search. 3. I have just checked by looking myself up - not a very good example as I have opted out of the printed register for the last 10 years - and it looks as if you can't specify a second name on FMP (but it's only for 2002 -2013 plus an historic Cheshire one) and whilst you can on Ancestry they only have a very limited number of historic electoral rolls available to search. I have just checked GR and they only seem to have electoral rolls for 2002-2013 so again it is obviously little use for historic searching. 192.com also have them and I have just searched for a neighbour using both of his names and he comes up so I would recommend that one if you are looking for modern data. What would have been the engineering jobs in Haslingden in 1920s to 40s? For an engineer in the 1940s, where should I be looking? I imagine the war would have had an impact on engineering then. regards Marg OLeary Port Stephens NSW
