Author: RxCairns Surnames: PRITCHARD, SHELL Classification: military Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.lan.general/52603/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I was doing research to help someone on the list when I found this story, of the burial of a World War I hero in 2013. His body had lain undisturbed in a French farmer's field for almost 100 years, until excavation of the field took place and his identity bracelet was found. The Ministry of Defence and War Graves Commission had launched a search for relatives His great-niece, Janet Shell, discovered the story when she was doing internet research. "Now what began with three little words typed into an Internet search engine is set to end this month with a full military burial in France," attended by more than 30 of John Harold Pritchard's relatives from Merseyside, said the Liverpool Echo story from April 2013. You can find the story here - http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liverpool-news/merseyside-family-set-bury-world-3320113 Here is a story on the funeral - http://www.itv.com/news/story/2013-04-23/funerals-for-soldiers-of-ww1/? Sumi48 raises a good point maybe he left the country. There is a chance he just left his wife. Quite common before divorce for poor people. It is also quite possible that he went by his middle name. You might want to try the 1920 US or Canadian census. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The Preston Chronicle newspaper, 16th November 1878 reported the death of a James Singleton, aged four years and ten months, the son of Mr.Thomas Singleton of the Engine Hotel, Skelmersdale. Thomas Singleton presumably was then the owner of the hotel. Thomas Yates and family occupied the Engine Hotel at the time of the 1881 census. 1. [LAN] McMAHON FAMILY PRESTON + CHARLES EDWARD VALENTINE McMAHON
    2. Polly
    3. Charles Edward Valentine McMahon (what a lovely name !) was the husband of my late Great Aunt Annie (nee Derbyshire). They were married in 1912 in Preston. He was born 1877 in Aldershot, Hampshire but in the 1901 and 1911 census he was in Preston, later a Recruiting Sergeant at Fulwood Barracks.. In 1912 he married Annie Derbyshire and in 1916 as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment he was awarded a military funeral leaving the family home at 122 St Stephens Road, Preston. He is buried in Preston Cemetry. I have found that he received the two medals which were awarded to soldiers in WW1 so a bit of a mystery why he was awarded a military funeral, normally reserved for decorated officers and quite rare. I am told the only other Preston hero to be awarded such a military funeral was a Private Young, Victoria Cross. If there is anyone with an interest in this family (parents originally from Ireland with a large family living in Preston) I would be so interested to hear from them. Kind regards, Pauline

I know my ancestor Thomas Yates purchased this Hotel between 1871 & 1881. It was passed down in my family until around 1940 - 1945. However I can find no information! I know it was quite popular and they had many music bands playing there. Any information either for the sale of this to Thomas Yates in the 1870's or the sale in the 1940's from Mary Ann Speakman. Or any advertisements about the events that were held there. I am really struggling to find any sort of info but there must be some advertising or things out there? Any help would be very much appreciated. Many Thanks - Laura Yates. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [LAN] PHILIP CRAWSHAW 1857
    2. Robyn Clarke
    3. Following on I have just found the following article which may explain why Philip Crawshaw left his wife Ann Nuttall and three sons, at the time living in Blackburn. "BLACKBURN STANDARD Newspaper November 25, 1857: Serious Defalcation by a Coal Agent. We regret to announce that Mr. Philip Crawshaw agent in this town for Mr. Holden, Coal Proprietor of Southport, has absconded and that defalcations in his accounts have been discovered amounting to several hundred pounds. No trace of his whereabouts has yet been discovered." Can anyone find him immigrating to the US around this time? I've looked under BIRTWISTLE and CRAWSHAW and can't pick him up.....thought a fresh set of eyes may do the trick. Cheers and TIA, Robyn Australia

    1. [LAN] PHILIP CRAWSHAW Whereabouts??
    2. Robyn Clarke
    3. Hello All, I have a copy of a Will of WILLIAM BARNES of Oakenshaw dated 1866 in which his only surviving daughter ELLEN BARNES of Church Lancs. is the wife of WILLIAM CRAWSHAW, Printer. I found a Marriage on OPC for them as William Birtwistle and Ellen Barnes in 1828 thereafter in 1841 three sons and a daughter are found in 1841 Census with surname BIRTWISTLE.  The children are Baptised and found on OPC as BIRTWISTLE except the youngest Haworth Crawshaw 1841. By 1851 and until the Death of William in 1888 the surname reverts to CRAWSHAW. The eldest son is PHILIP/PHILLIP CRAWSHAW born about 1830 Accrington Lancashire. His MARRIAGE is to ANN NUTTALL 24 January 1852 St. Peters’ Burnley.  Bachelor and Spinster.  Father names William Crawshaw, Printer. Following are their three sons – VINCENT ARTHUR 1853, THOMAS 1855 AND CHARLES W. 1857 all born Blackburn Lancashire. By 1861 census Ann Crawshaw is living with her brother Thomas Nuttall in Burnley, stating married and with her sons.  Thereafter she is calling herself a Widow. However in said Will of WILLIAM BARNES the exception is noted of a share of his estate to other Grandson Philip Crawshaw, which share to be paid to his wife towards the maintenance and support of her infant children etc.  So by this time Philip has blotted his copybook and gone……… So where does Philip go??  I cannot find him deceased in England or remarried in England, but there is mention on some Ancestry Family Trees of a Philip Birtwistle Crawshaw living a full life in the US stating arrived there around 1859.  There appear to be no instances of proof to this Claim, except his Obit. And MI in Denver Colorado, which gives a slightly different age and born Preston Lancs. And no mention of a previous life in the UK or parents!!! Would anyone be able to help resolve my dilemma…….?  TIA, Robyn Australia
