I am interested in Yates close to Preston. My gr-grandfather John Henry Yates, was born 1838 , supposedly in Preston. His father was stated to be a merchant. Could there be any connection between Thomas and John Henry? Do you know Thomas's parents names ? I know my ancestor Thomas Yates purchased this Hotel between 1871 & 1881. It was passed down in my family until around 1940 - 1945. However I can find no information! I know it was quite popular and they had many music bands playing there. Any information either for the sale of this to Thomas Yates in the 1870's or the sale in the 1940's from Mary Ann Speakman. Or any advertisements about the events that were held there. I am really struggling to find any sort of info but there must be some advertising or things out there? A long shot but you never know. The info you mention came from 1881 UK census I believe, is that correct? I believe Sophia was born in British Guiana in 1816, and married to Matthew Steele in 1832. I'm trying to bridge the gap between Sophia Bagot, and George Bagot, who I believe was her father. (His 3rd daughter by my info) George was born (and died) in Ireland as far as I know, but he spent several years in British Guiana. If it's the same person, he was High Sheriff of British Guiana. That's the hurdle I'm working on currently. I see you have Bagots in your interests. Is this a group you're familiar with? If there's anything I can assist with, I'd be happy to.
