My gr-grandfather John Henry Yates, was born 07 Oct 1838 , supposedly in Preston. His father was stated to be a merchant. Could there be any connection between Thomas and John Henry? Do you know Thomas's parents names ? John Henry married in Australia in 1868. He says his parents names (this is from his marriahe certificate) were John Yates and Mary Burtin. I will double check but I think I have seen this James GREY before. His father is Thomas Grey and in later censuses his family is different to our James GRAY. Our James, at HIS wedding in Mar 1871 gave his father as Edward, deceased. Thomas GREY above, was still alive in 1881 ! Unfortunately, this has been a stumbling block for me for 20 years. I have had a little more luck recently in finding a living relative, a second cousin, once removed. We are related through James who was married to Jane. My second cousin has given me Jane's parents and grandparents so we have moved backwards two generations to around 1790. So I am making some slow progress. Thank you for your interest and the information. Regards David Gray, now aged 66 living near Oxford. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The 1881 entry showing German-British I believe is the enumerator not being able to read the original entries and should read Guyana - British. In 1871 sophia is at 46 Sefton terrace Princes Road liverpool Widow aged 58 together with Isabella daughter 30 born Georgetown, Anya B daughter 19 born Georgetown, Charlotte A Bagot sister 52 49. Sophia's birthplace is difficult to read but is transcribed as "Bonhulme Norway"!! Anya and Tempe her sisters are transcribed as being born in "Hereste Denen Easequels"!! However in the Royal Gazette 1817 ( www.vc.id.ac/edg/18170419rg.html ) there is reference to "The Hon George Bagot, a second mortgage on his one undivided half of plantation 'T Huis te Dienen situate on the west coast of the river Essequebo.." If you then look at the 1871 Census page then the sisters birthplace "Hereste denen Easequels" should read "House Dienen Essequebo" SIMPLES!! I think Christmas got in the way and I'm kept fairly busy looking after my wife who is wheelchair bound with MS. Thank you for your information, once again. You must be keen. I don't think we have the right facts/people here Jim. Ann Gray my gt aunt, was born 1880. Therefore if she did marry Abraham Ashcroft in 1901, she would have been age only 21, not 38. As you say if this was my Ann Gray was now a Melling on marrying Abraham, she had married very young the first time round. I recently found my first living relative, a young lady in Cambridge who is my second cousin, once removed. My only blood relatives are one family who live in Burnley. Author: buffalowind Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.lan.general/42032.1.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Maureen, Wow! Thanks for your digging, there's a lot of detail there. Perhaps you can help me with some guidance, as you are local to my Liverpool roots. I'm trying to find a relationship between "Matthew Steele & Son", soap makers in the late 1700's in Liverpool, to Matthew Steele (1799). I think the father and son are Matthew and Matthew, my 4th and 3rd G Grandfathers, but haven't found a solid connection and am unsure of where to look. I found them in various directories etc, but no solid link. An obituary for either would help, but those have eluded me so far. The elder Matthew Steele died 1830, and the younger 1860, both in Liverpool, or close by. The son, if it is the same family, owned several sugar plantations in British Guiana, and my 2nd G Grandfather was born there. British Guiana records are sparse at best. Until recently, for me, Liverpool meant the Fab Four, but now I've found a whole pile of family from there, so I think a visit is in order to your city. Thanks again for your generous efforts James Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
