I have information about him and Marianne and would happily share what I have, and am interested in anything that you may have. I have a copy of a letter written to Robert by his aunt Maria Reay telling him that he was not the child of Charles and Marianne, but he was adopted. There is enough information in the letter for me to have traced his birth mother. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The 1841 census is from Guisley, Yorkshire. I might be getting excited for nothing, but this town is 28 miles from another town called Braithwaite, which just happens to be the middle name of young Joseph Charles Braithwaite Ellis !!!! It was quite common to name the son after the father/grandfather. I wonder if the name Charles fits in with the Ellis or the Ross family Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Here are all the details from it.. Joseph D Ellis 32yrs Bachelor Steward of a Vessel Address:25 Waterloo Rd, Liverpool. Father: Samuel Ellis a Clothier Mary Jane Ross 21yrs Spinster Same address Father : Andrew Lyle Ross a Foreman to a Cotton Factory. Witnessed by James Brindle and Jane Parry. Liverpool Presbyterian Church, Liverpool 17/7/1855 I know false ages have been given at marriages, but those stated would mean Joseph was born 1823(doesn't tally with census as should be 1837/39 Big difference). and Mary Jane was born 1834 rather than 1837/39 as census would have us believe I looked at the birth cert for Joseph Charles Braithwaite Ellis 6/8/1864. Father Joseph was a Barman in Spirit Vault. Address given as 19 Horatio Street, Liverpool. Barman and Steward, pretty similar. Obvious change in profession by the 1871 census when he is an Agent. What period was this? Just looked in a 1895 directory, several gunmakers that appear to be around the centre of Manchester. It's possibly many could be small scale, making guns by hand rather than mass production. Also Sir Joseph Whitworth, Ashton Old Road, Openshaw. Give a date and will have a look in some others.
