    1. [LAN] Family History
    2. Barb Ontario Canada
    3. Am enjoying these stories. Here’s mine............ My Mom was born in Wigan; came to Canada, age 11, along with her brothers and parents. She never saw her cousins/aunts/uncles/grandparents again, except for one aunt who braved the high seas and came to visit once in the 1950s. But, there were many many letters from England through the years. Mom was particularly close to one cousin (who I shall name “Susie” so as to not hurt any one’s feelings). When I was young, Mom used to tell me over and over about poor Cousin "Susie” who was “left standing at the altar” ; never recovered from the pain of that ; hence never married or had children. Imagine my surprise (after Mom had died) when sorting through all the papers and letters, only to find one from my Uncle (WWII Canadian forces) who visited Wigan on leave, after being posted to Holland for a time. In the letter to my Mom from her brother, he says “Imagine our “Susie” taking off like that with a married man! ! !” So, sometimes one never knows the whole story, I think. Barb, Ontario, Canada.

    3. Greetings from Alabama... OK guys here's another....... My mom had a first cousin that for years came every holiday to stay with them. Mom and siblings loved this cousin, my grandad loved this cousin, my grandmother tolerated this cousin. Mom and siblings couldn't understand why their loving mother felt this way. Years pass and mom a teenager finds her parents arguing and like most teenagers stays out of sight and listens. Turns out this instead of keeping knickers up LOL my grandfather couldn't keep his pants zipped. Even nearly 90 years later the family want it hushed...me I am a firm believer secrets end up destroying families so refuse to hide the good, bad and the ugly I find out that my grans sister died shortly after my moms cousin was born and before grandad married gran. So truthfully don't get the shame. Another story about the goings on in Lancashire. 3. No, I'm afraid not. My great grandparents came (separately, as teenagers) from County Cork to Highgate and Dartford. My line spread to Bedfordshire and the North East but none went to Manchester. We didn't have any Davids. And they aren't where the bastards came in--the Catholic Irish were all married at least nine months before the birth of the first child. But those mill girls in Lancashire and miners' daughters in County Durham--dear me :-) John Lynch -----Original Message----- From: lancsgen-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:lancsgen-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of terese mcgrath Sent: 13 February 2014 06:35 To: lancsgen@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [LAN] Family history Hi John Lynch, I descend from a long line of Lynch's originally from Ireland but thereafter happily ensconced in Manchester. 3. How sweet! Not quite like that, but I was raised in a devout Catholic home. My parents' wedding anniversary was Oct. 13th. When I started this madness I got the sacramental record from St. Carthage and the date was Oct. 22nd. Puzzled I asked my aunt who was happy to tell me my parents eloped and were first married by a JP just 8 days before having their marriage blessed! My eldest sister arrived well over a year later, so that wasn't it. They never told us and I had a hard time forgiving my aunt for telling their secret! Marriage cert has Mary Jane Ross in full, she didn't sign it, just her mark and husband Joseph is down as Joseph D, Ellis. His signature also reads Joseph D, Ellis. There is a dot/squiggle after D, but not high up to appear as an apostrophe, more middle way down the capital D followed by Ellis written with a capital E. The father's name is clearly Samuel Ellis not D'Ellis. The birth cert for Joseph Charles Braithwaite Ellis has father named just Joseph Ellis no initials, yet when Joseph C B married in 1883, on his marriage cert,he is noted only as Joseph and his father also only Joseph. No initials or middle names used. What are you thinking ? Two different families and I've been barking up the wrong tree ? I've had a good long hard think and probably I'm piecing the wrong bits together. The more I look at dates , ages and placenames, the more I think I'm wrong. I keep going back to 1871 census which stated Chirk. I cann't see the image online for that marriage I told you about between Mary LLoyd and Joseph Ellis in 1862. Do you know how to look up the parish records ? If not, I'll purchase the cert. Karen Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I had seen the 1841 census with all the family. It's possible that Joseph joined the Merchant Navy. I came across 3 records for a Joseph Ellis but don't know how to verify which Jo Ellis they refer to. Also, the marriage cert in 1855 states his profession was a Steward on a vessel. Liverpool was a big seaport, so I'm guessing by 1851 he had headed out in that direction from Yorkshire. My biggest niggle is the placename Chirk. I wouldn't have thought a Yorkshireman, living in Liverpool, would claim to be from Wales ! What I have found is a Mary LLoyd marrying a Joseph Ellis in Denbighshire in 1862 This marriage date ties in better with the son's birth in 1865, Maybe that's why I cann't find a Liverpool birth. I'm going to buy the cert and see what info it reveals, not unless you know how to check it out online. It was at Trefnant, Denbighshire 4/10/1862 Thanks, Karen Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have found Christian names tend to run in families, perhaps this Thomas b. 1579 was the father of the three brothers. Bury is not too far away from Yorkshire...maybe the family originates from there and Robert of Timby went back there after his two brothers went to America? MARY Rhodes did marry Samuel Ellis at Wesleyan Methodist in Horsforth. Their Son Joseph was born 17/3/1820 but christened along with his sister Mary on 10/3 1824, Mary had been born a month previous. Perhaps THIS Joseph was born a bit too early to be my ancestor even though dad Samuel has the right profession. What's even more interesting is that there was a marriage between MARIA Rhodes and Samuel Ellis on 2/9/1833, which produced a son Joseph Rhodes Ellis 24/6/1834 along with a daughter Mary Rhodes Ellis who married in 1868. This birth year would be better, but then his middle initial would be R instead of Joseph D. So obviously this is the wrong one also, just a co-incidence that the names are all similar. I've not turned up anything on the marriage witnesses yet. It may be a tall ask. Parry may well be a married name. Has Welsh connections possibly, but then that could be similar to the name Ellis and placename Chirk on the Denbigh/Shropshire border. I've just come across a Joseph Ellis marriage to a Mary LLoyd in Trefnant, Denbighshire about an hour away from Chirk. Will look further tomorrow. How's your hunt going ? He was born at about (that's very about) 1604 in Bury, Lancashire, England. He immigrated to the Massachusetts Colony in the 1630's where he married a Susan Elizabeth Rogers, and had at least 3 daughters and one son, John Atkinson. He died by 1646 in Massachusetts. I also know he had at least 2 brothers, a Theodore, who adopted his son John after he died, and a Robert, supposedly mentioned in some legal paperwork dealing with some property he apparently still had in England. I've located records for the brother Theodore. He was born in about 1612 in Bury, Lancashire, England, and settled in Boston, Massachusetts, where he married an Abigail Chambers, and a Mary Wheelwright, and where he died in 1701. But I haven't found anything on the Robert. All I know is that he supposedly stayed in England, He was probably born in the same Bury, Lancashire, England the other brothers were born in, and that he supposedly lived in a Timby Parish, in Halifax, England. I haven't even been able to locate the Timby Parish. Google Maps doesn't recognize it. I would like help in either tracing the parentage of this Thomas Atkinson, or in locating his brother Robert Atkinson, where there might be clues, because he supposedly never left England.
