    3. Hi Everyone I thought I would do a little more hunting for my Britcliffe/Briercliffe family who were in the Rochdale, Salford and Manchester areas. I'm trying to find my Mary Britcliffe/Briercliffe on the 1841 Census. She was born in Rochdale in 1828 (Smallbridge) 1844 MARY Britcliffes first recorded conviction which lead to 6 months gaol in Salford??New Bailey prison. This conviction appears in the Manchester Times and Gazzette on September 14, 1844 her name spelt Mary BIRTCLIFFE for stealing potatoes the property of John Taylor. On Ancestry this is recorded as receiving stolen goods?? (Aged 18). The below is Mary's mother and sister and she is not living with them from what I can see. 1841 Census at 7 Cumberland St.Manchester (near Deansgate) one Hannah BRICLIFFE age 30/35 living with Elizabeth, Hannah was a Clear Starcher who was born in the county living with 6 other people HO 107/569/2 Mary's father John Britcliffe/Briercliffe cannot be located deceased or living anywhere that I could find after 1833 which is the birth of Mary's last sibling Charlotte in 1833. 1854 Hannah Briercliffe dies age 47 years widow of John Briercliffe Carter living at 15 Evan Street Salford, James Briercliffe present at the death. If anyone can offer any suggestions as to how I can find a death for John Briercliffe (there is one that is the Grandson of Hannah recorded). death dec qtr 1854 Hannah Briercliffe Salford 8d 58 death sep qtr 1859 John Briercliffe Salford 8d 52 If anyone can find Mary recorded anywhere on the 1841 Census or working in a Factory, that would be great. It has been suggested on Mary's indent that she was "On the Town" whether that's true or not I don't know. I cannot find any children born to her though. Anyway any help much appreciated. Kindest regards Dianna from Oz

My BARNES go back to mid 18th century within the District of Altham, where we have found a possible 12 children born to GEORGE and MARY BARNES. Unfortunately, we cannot positively identify Mary's maiden surname..HAWORTH or DUCKWORTH...in any case, I also have both surnames attached to others, so include them as well. The BIRTWISTLE connection was my 3xGGrandmother, ELLEN BIRTWISTLE from Accrington, dau. Of ROBERT BIRTWISTLE and SUSAN ASHWORTH. ELLEN married HENRY JOSEPH BARNES 1788 in Accrington. He was a Blacksmith. They too had 12 children, but not all survived to adulthood. My GGGrandfather JACOB HENRY BARNES (b. abt. 1805) did. He was invited to N.S.W. Australia where he spent 7 years working for the Gov., after a small matter of poaching on a neighbouring Estate in New Accrington went wrong and he and MARK NOBLE were caught with the gun barrel belonging to the Estate owner, JONATHAN PEEL. But for this one misdemeanour I would not be here to tell the tale! In the 18th century JOHN WELCH born Accrington had 11 children, his wife was ELLEN REETON of Church. However they moved into Hyde, Cheshire later on. Their son THOMAS WELCH born in Brinscall 1836 married ELIZABETH BARNES and conducted Green Vale Printworks in Westhoughton. My ARMITAGE family originated in Lydgate, Kirkburton, Yorkshire, but don't hold that against them, because they moved to the area of Failsworth, LANCASHIRE in the mid 18th century and into Dukinfield Manchester thereafter. One Member became the Mayor of Manchester and was knighted, Sir Elkanah Armitage whilst in cotton manufacturing ...whilst my GGGrandfather JOHN ARMITAGE sailed to Brazil, in the employ of Phillips, Wood & Co., of Manchester and wrote whilst there in 1836 a continuation of Southey's "History of Brazil". He then moved on to Ceylon after 7 years in Brazil and formed ARMITAGE, SCOTT & CO., later ARMITAGE BROS., Merchants and Traders. But that's another Story... However, JOHN came home to Chorlton upon Medlock in 1856 where he died too young, leaving wife FANNY HENRIETTE JUMEAUX and 7 children including my GGrandfather CHARLES CYRUS ARMITAGE. My numerous OGDEN connections were 1733 onwards in Ashton-under-Lyne; Married into the ARMITAGE branch in Failsworth, Lancashire. Enough for this time... 3. Hello Mike It is people like you that make the list special. Thank you for all that you share. I am researching our Duckworth family from Rossendale and in fact, I have been writing a book for the last four years. I hope to have it published by the end of the year after my husband and I have visited Rossendale in June. We are so excited as it is our first trip to the UK! I have traced the family back to John and Alice Duckworth from Laund in Rossendale. They were born in the 1760's. Without all the great information online this would not have been possible. I am not sure where they lived in Laund yet so more research is needed. Good luck and thank you again for your wonderful contributions Mike With kind regards Deb Duckworth Jan Juc, Victoria, Australia -----Original Message----- From: lancsgen-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:lancsgen-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Mike Morris Sent: Saturday, 15 February 2014 12:54 AM To: lancsgen@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [LAN] Family history Hi John, That's an interesting piece of family history and something you could not find in Ancestry or Find My Past. 3. Well, I agree. (When I got to Jeddah I discovered that my hotel has now fixed its wifi problems). The single most rewarding method I find is to go to the archives and sit there going through old documents, but these groups come a close second. There are so many people on here who know more than I do and they're always ready to help. I've clambered out of a number of dead ends that way. John Lynch Hi John, That's an interesting piece of family history and something you could not find in Ancestry or Find My Past. That's why people should make the effort to stay in touch with our family history group (Rootsweb). I for one have met many lovely people over the years. Love the stories and how they are so willing to help each other or new comers. I learnt a lot of family history research tips moves through the kindness and patience of our list members.  By the way, I do enjoy looking up old locations in the maps I have. It gives me a great pleasure when I can be of help. See what goes around comes around.................... I think that's how they say it :)) Hopefully our favourite List will now start picking up steam. All my best Mike Morris Toronto Canada Ex Manchester, England.

    3. Hi Mike, John and Listers, I thank you all for giving me so much enjoyable information and on occasions a good laugh......I may not be researching my crew at present, but I never unsubscribe to this List, too many wonderful stories and kind fellow researchers on board. One never knows when I too may be able to give a helping hand to others. Mike's great help with his old maps allowed me to trace my BARNES just a bit further into the past. Perhaps it is a good opportunity for all those huddled indoors in the Northern Winter at present to renew our Lancashire surname interests once more. 2. Hi Debs, The only Laund I know of is in Pendle. If you ancestors came from Newchurch there is a Newchurch in Rossendale and a Newchurch in Pendle. It does cause a mix up sometimes. I would be interested in the Laund in Rossendale. Thanks to all who share information on this list. I have been a member, on and off, since it started and have been give help and encouragement from so many of the Listers and the List Momma's. Very best wishes to all. Pauline in Darwen, Lancashire

    3. Hi Robyn.......have we spoken before about your Ogdens?? I first find mine in Blackley/Middleton area....Samuel Ogden + Betty Haworth. I realize that Ogden's are thick on the ground in that area, but if you think there may be a connection....let me know and I'll give you the rest. mary lou -----Original Message----- From: Robyn Clarke <rsclarke@bigpond.com> To: LANCSGEN <LANCSGEN@rootsweb.com> Sent: Fri, Feb 14, 2014 5:23 pm Subject: [LAN] Surnames BARNES, ARMITAGE, BIRTWISTLE, OGDEN, WELCH, etc. Hello All, Just in case there are some new Listers hovering in the shadows I am including just a very few Surnames of my Lancashire roots. Anyone with any connections to any of the above, please contact me.
