Having rechecked the birth and marriage certs, the mother of Jos Ch B Ellis is listed as Mary Ellis (Formerly Ross) and father as Joseph Ellis. It is the marriage cert that has the full name of Mary Jane Ross recorded. I have found in 1841 records, an Andrew Ross, Overseer in Cotton Factory with a daughter Mary born 1839 living in Scotland. The marriage cert has Andrew Lyle Ross, Foreman to a Cotton Factory noted as father to Mary Jane Ross. Co-incidence ?? The Welsh marriage between Joseph Ellis and Mary Lloyd has turned out to be a red-herring so I will not be pursuing that line. Still need to locate Samuel Ellis and both Mr & Mrs Joe Ellis on 1861 census, given that they were married in 1855. When all this is said and done, still need to know why Joe Ellis is recorded as coming form Chirk in 1871 census. Well, one step at a time I suppose. The birth cert has the mother's name in full as Mary Jane Ross, yet the father's as just Joseph Ellis Do you think i'm following the wrong path? I'm not too convinced due mainly to Yorkshire as birthplace as opposed to Chirk on census records. Their Liverpool marriage in 1855 does seem to be advanced for their only child's birth in 1865. I have now been concentrating on the marriage of Joseph Ellis to Mary Lloyd on 4/10/1862 in Denbigh. This date would fit in better with my gt gt gf birth in 1865 Joseph ,a labourer. son of George also a labourer, born Flintshire (Chirk border) 1836 and Mary Lloyd, d/o James Lloyd, also a labourer. Witnesses were Thomas Ellis and Elizabeth Lloyd, who if according to census, were siblings to the married couple.. All I need to find now is a birth for a Joseph Ellis about 1865 with a mother surname Lloyd !!! I do hope that this is not another red herring. Author: djl79ewing Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.lan.general/166.3/mb.ashx Message Board Post: 1881 census. Alfred Griggin at 6 Underwood Court, Chorlton on Medlock with father Grank G. Griffin (wife not recorded) siblings: Louisa 11 years, Edith 10, Frances 8, Agnes 7, Joseph 5.....all born in Otley, Yorkshire. Alfred was 5, born Chorlton on M., Manchester 1891 census: Includes both parents. Frederick b. Birmingham 1845 & Mary A. b.Dublin, Ireland 1846 children as 1881 plus 21 year old Mary born Otley, Yorkshire living at Bishop Street, Cheetham, Manchester 1901 census. Frederick and Mary, plus Dau. Mary, Joseph and Alfred. Occupation of Frederick was bookbinder. Alfred was a joiner. Living at 5 Ashworth Street, Prestwich, Manchester. A couple of points you may find useful when searching. Chorlton on Medlock is within Manchester, but very often if you search giving Manchester as the place name you don't get a result, you have to put in Chorlton. If one fails to find what you are looking for try the other. There is also another area of Manchester named Chorlton, full title Chorlton-cum-Hardy. Treat County of Lancaster and Lancashire as the same, generally Lancashire is used more frequently. Prestwich, where the Griffins lived in 1901 can cause confusion. it appears that boundaries have changed and all or part of Prestwich was once within Manchester. If having difficulty searching it is worth trying Prestwich, Manchester as well as Prestwich Lancashire. County, and othe boundaries have changed. Today Manchester is no longer in Lancashire, it is part of greater Manchester and has been since around the 1970's. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
