Author: jennybee11 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.lan.general/52682/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello, I'm trying to find some social history of Robert George Murray, who lived at One Ash, Gorton, Manchester between 1890 until his death in 1927. He was quite a well known man. I believed he owned an inn or hotel, maybe the Lord Nelson Inn, Hyde Rd, Gorton around 1901 or the Navigation Hotel in Hyde. If anyone could have a look in the local newspaper archive or records for me it would be greatly appreciated. many thanks Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. thank you, i didnt know about the opt out, that explains a lot regards Marg OLeary Port Stephens NSW -----Original Message----- From: sally roberts Sent: Tuesday, March 11, 2014 11:18 PM To: englangeneral Subject: Re: [LAN] Holmes Wareing in Haslingden Hi Marg, I would advise you to search through the electoral rolls. There are a couple of ways to do this, although neither of them will be free. You can buy credits to search for information via either www.192.com or you can buy credits via Find My Past and search on their site. It would be an idea for you to have some knowledge of who married whom, as this may help to confirm any spouses or offspring shown at addresses that are returned from your search. The rolls available run from 2002. It should be borne in mind, however, it is possible to opt out from having your details published from the rolls, so you may or may not be successful in your searching, nothing is guaranteed. All the "inmates" are young men (36 of them) and had means of employment.. There was a "lodging house for women " on Angel Street, The area was poor and there were many houses that took lodgers. The Salvation Army had a massive hostel just up the road - George Gordon Jefferson, elder brother of Stan Laurel ( of Laurel & Hardy) killed himself there in 1938 Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I looked allum Street up and there was a Victorian police station which became a lock up. Not sure if it was still there in 1911. I presumed he was a prisoner with the census saying inmate. Yes I have added them to my tree, James as Williams "presumed father" and John as has his Uncle. As far as I am aware John and James had two sisters Catherine and Mary and another brother William. It is looking likely that James is Williams father but no firm evidence due to the confusion of the birth dates. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Thankyou so much for taking the time. Margaret is down as arthurs wife of 15 years in 1911, living with Ellen and John and their baby. Ellen was 22 so very odd. Separate censuses but the same address. It is driving me potty. I need to check Ireland records to see if a Margaret O'mara married either man there. Ellen was buried as Ellen Ferns in 1929, we have been to the grave, which funnily enough is near to where I live and not where they lived. She died in childbirth but no trace of the baby. Its been said she was buried with child still inside her but not sure if that is true. Is the Allum Street where John was an inmate? Do you know what sort of place this was? 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: AllyLDrewery Surnames: Palmer, Jones Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.lan.general/52679/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My Great Grandfather William Palmer was born 1868 West Derby (his naval records shows his DOB as 15 April 1868, West Derby, Liverpool, but I'm not able to locate a birth record for him for that date) William at 13 years old can be located in the 1881 census lodging with his Uncle John Palmer (clearly stated as Nephew). He joined the Navy 24 March 1884 His address showing on record is 21 Uxbridge Street (John Palmer is showing to have lived at 21 Uxbridge Street sometime after 1881 up until his death in 1903) and Williams previous occupation was a Confectioner. With the Navy he arrived in Devonport, Plymouth in 1891 where he later married my Great Grandmother Jessie Maud Mary Flower on 12 September 1896. Their marriage certificate shows Williams father as John Palmer (deceased) Occupation Iron/town Porter. There is a confusion as John Palmer had a brother named James (married to a Ann Jones) who had a son named William Palmer born 3 January 1868, West Derby (birth certificate located), so there is a possibility William Palmer parents may have been John's brother, James and Ann Jones (a William Palmer aged 3 can be located in 1871 census with his mother Ann). If anyone can provide further information or any suggestions on the information above, would be much appreciated.
