    3. Hi Rod, What details are there on James McFarland Kennedy? Does it note his occupation, residence, age etc? It may be that he can be traced via the census, which would give his place of birth. I am very grateful. It is most mysterious that my Carters are not there, unless of course they were too poor to have a stone. As you say they may be in Toxteth although this seems odd since there are several Carters in the area for hundreds of years going back to at least the 17th century and wills stipulating that they were to be buried in Garston. I wonder if they were buried at Childwall instead? Please do not start working on clearing weeds as I shall feel so guilty!! My illness is getting worse so please do not be offended if I do not reply to your posts. I have no connection so far to the Pownalls. What names were on the gravestones that you could read? There are a couple of Carter graves, but I cannot connect one of them to the family you have written about. Checked the registers with Eileen Rogers, and although some Carters deaths are recorded in the parish registers, it does not necessarily mean they are buried in the churchyard. I did find a stone which had another family name on of Pownall, and on the top of the headstone reads "the burial place of Henry Carter", but no indication as to a date. I will have to revisit the churchyard when it gets a little warmer as there is a large stone (laid on the ground approx. 4' x 6'), and is in one of the oldest and overgrown parts. I will have to investigate further for you which means removing some of the overgrown weeds in an effort to decipher the names. If the family members are not in the churchyard, they would almost certainly have been buried in Toxteth Park Cemetery or in Anfield Cemetery if there was a family gr! ave there already. Sorry not to have been able to give you something definite at this time. Sue Thompson, Liverpool Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: sgmcgregor Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.lan.general/52694/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am researching John Miller, son of Kenneth Miller and Helen Bruce, who was born circa 1834 in Wick, Caithness, Scotland. John married Elizabeth Lyall on 25 Jnauary 1856 in Kinnaird Street, Pulteneytown, Wick. After having a couple of children in Wick, John, who was a mason by trade, moved with his wife to the Liverpool area and I have tracked the family as far as 1891. In 1871 and 1881 the family were living at 23 Fielding Street in Liverpool, and in 1891 they were living at 126 Holt Road, Liverpool. On the census records John was variously described as a mason, stone mason and builder, and as a building contractor. John and Elizabeth had four children that I know of:- Catherine (1856), Kenneth (1859), Elizabeth Ellen Mary (c1866), and Margaret Ann Jessie (c1869). John Miller was a brother of my direct ancestor, Christina Miller (1828-1906), and I was hoping that someone else is researching the same family. After having researched my direct line ancestors, I have now been trying to find what happened to each of the branches of the family. There seem to be many who moved out of Caithness, Scotland, and some of them chose England to move to. If anyone has an interest in the same family I would welcome any contact, and I am more than willing to share information. 2. Martin Briscoe
    3. I notice BBC4 is repeating the programme about Jennet Davies of Pendle next weekend. HISTORY DOCUMENTARY: The Pendle Witch Child On: BBC 4 (Freeview) Date: Sunday 30th March 2014 (starting in 7 days) Time: 23:30 to 00:30 (1 hour long) Simon Armitage presents the story of the most disturbing witch trial in British history and the key role played in it by one nine-year-old girl. Jennet Device, a beggar-girl from Pendle in Lancashire, was the star witness in the trial in 1612 of her own mother, her brother, her sister and many of her neighbours, who were all hanged thanks to Jennet's testimony. Armitage explores the power and influence of one child's words - a story of fear, magic and demonic pacts retold partly using animation. He discovers how Jennet's appearance cast its shadow way beyond Lancashire, impressing lawyers, politicians, clerics and even King James I himself, and setting a dark precedent for child testimony other witch trials. Historians Malcolm Gaskill, Diane Purkiss and Ronald Hutton help Armitage to understand how the illegitimate and illiterate youngest child of a family of beggars could become both pawn and player in a much bigger story of 17th century religion, power, law, science and the monarchy. You have identified the family that I'm interested in. My inclusion of "Scotland Park" in my original post relates to where they lived and kept shop. Thomas James Fenerty (head of household) was a provision dealer. The building where the family worked and lived still stands although the place is now boarded and the area is a slum. I've found a paper trail indicating that Thomas' business went bankrupt along with similar dealings for a son and daughter who followed in his footsteps. Thomas, Jr. fled to Australia at the age of 20. Son Edward (who you identified) fled to America where he created his own large family of 6.
