Hi Cherryl It is quite likely although finding same may be the problem, systems may vary but the need for the records are likely the same, whether they survive is another matter Have a look at these two links which may lead you in the right direction <https://familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/Scotland_Land_and_Property> And via <http://www.nas.gov.uk/catalogues/default.asp> <http://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/research/guides/researching-places> Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 11/10/2015 03:33, Merv & Cherryl via wrote: > Hi. > > I know this is a Lancashire site but would Scotland keep the same detailed > agreements. > > Cherryl
You are most welcome What I would also suggest is making contact with the county records office, ask if they have anything on the two farms in question I have some tenancy agreements for some of my lot in Buckinghamshire, they are somewhat later than yours but I would say its worth asking The tenancy agreements can be very detailed They itemised what the farmer took over and when and the restrictions placed upon him, what he had to do by way of maintenance and repairs and what would happen when he vacated at the end of the period Very far from all survive but worth the question They may also be able to help with a location for Delph Hole Alston Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 10/10/2015 21:21, Katharine Harris via wrote: > Hello Nivard, > > Thank you so much for taking the time and trouble to find Sowerbutts Farm for me. Hello Nivard, Thank you so much for taking the time and trouble to find Sowerbutts Farm for me. I had concluded that Edmund was most probably a tenant farmer, but I had not realised that their terms of 'Office' were for only 3 years-not long really. I will see if I can locate Delph Hole, Alston. Thank you so much, Katharine
Hi Katherine I will send you two attachments re Sowerbutts If you search googlemaps for Four Acre Ln, Thornley, Preston PR3 2TD you will find a Farm presently called Giles Farm This location was called Townleys in 1844 (OS map) Giles's was a little further North in 1844 Many farms changed hands, most were tenants and would farm for a period of years, often three The smaller and less profitable farms were often swallowed up into larger farms as time went by and farming methods improved I do not see Sowerbutts past 1844, there does not appear to be any buildings surviving in that location today but the map I shall send will pinpoint its location as best as I can make out Unfortunately the early map for Alston is not available so could not locate Delph Hole Alston but Alston is not far away from where Sowerbutts was, Alston is just south of Longridge Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 10/10/2015 19:01, Katharine Harris via wrote: > Hello Listers, > > I have been watching this list for a long time and wondered if anyone > can help me. > > In 1841 Census, my ggg grandfather, Edmund MERCER, transcribed as > Edward is listed as living with his family at Sower Butts Farm, > Thornley. Hello Listers, I have been watching this list for a long time and wondered if anyone can help me. In 1841 Census, my ggg grandfather, Edmund MERCER, transcribed as Edward is listed as living with his family at Sower Butts Farm, Thornley. In 1851, he has moved to Delph Hole, Alston and Sower Butts Farm is no longer listed in any future census. My question is this: What happened to Sower Butts farm and are there any buildings left now? I live some distance away, but I am due to stay in the area from 25th Oct to 28th Oct 2015. If there was anything left, I would love to try and see it. Where exactly is Delph Hole, Alston? Any help is appreciated. Thank you. Katharine

Sally, I am so sorry for the loss of your mother. And may I also thank you for keeping us up to date with important entries despite the sadness you are enduring. Also must thank the volunteers who do all the transcribing that we all need in our family history searches. Hi David, The only suggestion I can think of besides Rootsweb is to try Trove, the newspaper search. But I am sure the Aussies will be able to think of some more suggestions. I am trying to find out what happened to my ggg grandfather's brother, Nathaniel CLARKE after my last sighting of him in a 1875 record. Nathaniel was the son of Peter Clarke, a Liverpool customs officer, and his wife Sarah nee Eccles. He was born at Douglas, Isle of Man in 1852 while his father was posted there. I have his birth and baptism record and I see him in the 1861 census living at Thomaston Street, Kirkdale. I also have a record of his enlistment in the Merchant Navy in 1866 and his 2nd Mates certificate of 1875 when he is described as living at 18 Jolliffe Street Liverpool. After that I can find no trace of him. Does anyone know any more about him? David Railton
Elaine, I have already responded separately about Edward Bleazard (senior) -- but I have now looked for the Edward born 1803. (I'm referring to him as Edward junior). I cannot see him, wife Jane, or daughter Christiana on the 1841 census. Have you found them? Nor do Edward and Jane seem to be around in 1851. Nor can I find a marriage at an appropriate time between an Edward Bleazard and Jane anywhere. (There is a marriage in 1810 in Lancaster to Jane Whiteside -- but that's too early and the wrong occupation for Edward (this one's a Hatter as opposed to a Labourer).) Edward Bleazard (junior) and Jane are therefore a bit of a mystery at the moment. Really sorry not to have been able to help. June Hi, I have an Edward baptised in 1803 to an Edward and Agnes in Melling near Hornby. (If I have the correct Edward) The 1803 Edward was married to Jane and father to Christiana (bap Lancaster) who married James Topping. Could anyone help me with who Jane was...I found one on the Mormon site but it was a bit of a distance away. Is the Edward baptised in Melling actually the father of Christiana? Who was Agnes married to the first Edward? Where was the first Edward from? Thank you for any help. I will be away for a couple of weeks so do not expect a response from me until Canadian Thanksgiving weekend. Hello all Members of the LPRS recently received a CD containing the final addition to the published Rainford Registers, Volume NC 08 Rainford Chapel 1813 - 1841. (See http://www.british-history.ac.uk/vch/lancs/vol3/pp382-386 and http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LAN/Rainford/ for information about Rainford.) There are quite a few old registers available through the LPRS. Please visit the society's web site at http://www.lprs.org.uk/ and look under Publications and Special Offers for what is available. If you are a member of the LPRS, note in your diary that the AGM will be held at 1 pm on Saturday, 16 April 2016. Lynne
What a great timely reminder Barbara of those who chose to leave Lancashire and sail to the unknown, in the hope of a better life. My husband's possible GGrandfather - EDWARD "THOMAS" CLARK b. 1838 last seen in Lancashire in 1851 Census, living with his parents Labourer, THOMAS and Wife, ALICE nee WILKINSON CLARK in Lower Booths, aged 14 yrs., Bobbin Setter in Cotton Mill. Sailed to Victoria, Australia alone it seems, possibly as a deckhand - Arrived in the Goldfields around Heathcote about 1860. Thereafter, unable to read or write, struggled as a bush Labourer and Miner. Married a girl, Maria, a Servant, from London, in 1871 in Heathcote, Victoria, four children born to her in the Goldfields of Victoria, no Father named for three sons born before her Marriage, the last child, a girl born after wedlock died from a scalding accident aged 3 yrs. Maria Clarke remained a Domestic Servant in the Goldfields until her disappearance possibly to Melbourne, where she died alone. EDWARD "THOMAS" CLARKE the "e" added on arrival in Melbourne, Victoria, disappeared from his Marriage after this accident in 1877 and is thought to have worked on a property in Northern Victoria for approx.. 23 years, before being killed by the collapse of a dis-used Well, which he had built some years earlier, when the owner asked for it to be re-opened. His body was never recovered. The evidence of this man's life was he was known to be English, had worked on the Property for 23 years, possible family unknown. Two of Maria's sons survived to adulthood having changed their surnames to CLARKE. Whether EDWARD "THOMAS" CLARK was the Father, is unknown. However, second son, HENRY WILKINSON CLARKE's Christian names indicated the "Wilkinson" name could have been taken from "Thomas's" Mother's maiden name. The third son WILLIAM EDWARD CLARKE was my husband's Grandfather. MARIA's brother, HENRY WELCH, also ended up in the Victorian Goldfields, only to be killed by a landslide. The only evidence of any of the above, has come from surviving Victorian records, as the only clue as to EDWARD "THOMAS' CLARK's Lancashire history was his Marriage Cert. in which his name was THOMAS CLARKE, he stated he was a "Mariner" and his Father, Thomas Clarke, an Architect.....A complete stretch from the truth, but I found him anyway. The sons did not speak of their parents, however it was known through my Father in Law, son of William Edward Clarke, that "Thomas" had a brother, a Watchmaker, back home in Lancashire, England. THAT man was WILLIAM CLARK b. 1832 of 10 Oak Street, Rawtenstall who died in 1897. Perhaps he too had been looking for his brother, EDWARD THOMAS. EDWARD "THOMAS" CLARK and his wife MARIA WELCH may have chosen very different paths in life had they known the grim outcomes for so many who were lured into the rough and dangerous Goldfields, throughout the World during those times. Both had arrived paying their own way, to find that better life which had been promised to so many.
