    1. Re: [LAN] Oldham - Hanging Bank
    2. Huntingdons via
    3. Hi Penny Not in Lees, Oldham but there was a small area of Manchester known as "Hanging Ditch" on Corporation Street, between Todd Street and Hanover Street. Not far from Red Bank, Manchester. The origin is: (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Manchester) :- "Manchester's medieval defences incorporated the rivers Irk and Irwell on two sides and a 410-metre (450 yd) long ditch on the others. The ditch, known as Hanging Ditch, was up to 37 metres (40 yd) wide and 37 metres (40 yd) deep. It was spanned by Hanging Bridge, the main route in and out of the town. The name may derive from hangan meaning hollow,[37] although there is an alternative derivation from the Old English hen, meaning wild birds, and the Welsh gan, meaning between two hills.[38] It dates to at least 1343 but may be even older." A 1950's map of Manchester is on-line at:- http://enriqueta.man.ac.uk/luna/servlet/detail/maps2~1~1~336743~122718:Manch ester-and-Salford Growing up in Manchester (1950's) I remember the area being called "Hanging Ditch" my father's bank account was at the Hanging Ditch branch of William Deacons Bank, on what is now Corporation Street. It was if I remember correctly Hanging Ditch was from Todd St to Millgate.and included the area between the north side of Corporation St up to but not including Victoria Station. The 1950s map shows the course of the ditch in dotted lines (because it is now buried along with the Hanging Bridge). Hope it helps, Bernard. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Penny Trueman via Sent: 25 October 2015 04:59 To: [email protected] Subject: [LAN] Oldham - Hanging Bank Hi list, I know where Bank Top was (near Lees Brook) but is there a Hanging Bank in the vicinity? 2. Penny Trueman via
    3. Hi David, Well, China Lane runs between Back Piccadilly and Brewer Street with Dale Street crossing it. I see that in 1861 there is an Ann Fisher of the right age, working as a Jack Tenter and living with parents Sam and Frances on Carruthers Street which is a good walk (but not too far) from China Lane and slightly to the northwest. Her father and one of her siblings were born in Yorkshire. Have you followed William Henry forward? His own marriage certificate (if any) may give a father’s name (if he found out). It may even have been Richard. Great Marton (and St. Paul's) is in the Blackpool area. 3. MARRIAGE: Indexed as JOHN WILLIAM DUY As per Ancestry.com original Parish Entry - At Christ Church in the District of Christ Church Kensington Co. of Lancaster 16 August 1880 JOHN WILLIAM DRY aged 22 yrs., Bachelor, Clerk, 76 Farnworth St. Father JOHN DRY Deceased Profession Plumber. ANNIE WRIGHT age 21 yrs., Spinster No occup. 18 Farnworth St., Father PETER WRIGHT, Car Proprietor. Married in the Christ Church according to and after Banns, Signed - John William Dry and Annie Wright in the presence of Peter Wright and Ann ? Same names as on the Birth Certificate for CHARLOTTE ELIZABETH DRY as forwarded earlier. No idea as to why he changed his name after this event. There was another John William Dry in Liverpool, perhaps that was it. The various emails I've sent today I believe get you as close to a match as is possible, age, occupation, Father, Surname match AND 1881 Census now found - 151 Towson St., Everton (Same address as on Charlotte's Baptism) JOHN W DRY, Head, Married 23, Railway Clerk, born Litherland Lanc. 1. [LAN] William Frederick DRY b1857 and ALICE ANN
    2. Robyn Clarke via
    3. Hi David, Another find for you. Hope this may clear up the name of the Wife of WILLIAM FREDERICK DRY. In 1861 I found the following Family: 25 Back Guildford St., Everton. ELIZABETH McNALLY Head, Widow, 36 yrs., Car Owner from Staffordshire with son JOHN under 7mths., PETER WRIGHT Brother, Mar. 26, Car Owner, wife CHARLOTTE ANN 29 YRS. And Sister in Law, with children CATHERINE WRIGHT 2, ALICE ANN WRIGHT 11 mnths and a Servant. So, it is found that ANNIE WRIGHT in 1871 was also called ALICE ANN WRIGHT in 1861.....and thus resorted to this name in latter years. If indeed she was the ANNIE WRIGHT who married JOHN WILLIAM DRY in 1880, that original M. Certificate is more important. ALICE ANN WRIGHT was Baptised 23 May 1860 and Born 3rd May 1860 to parents Peter and Charlotte Wright of Everton, Car Proprietor. St. Peter, Liverpool. 3. It is interesting to see David, that in 1901 Census whilst WILLIAM FREDERICK DRY 43, and family are living at No. 4 Hapsford Rd., Litherland, his Mother ELIZABETH CUBBINS Widow, aged 64 yrs., and MARY DRY, Widow aged 66 yrs., are residing at No. 6. Both born Winsford, Cheshire. These two ladies are bracketed as Sisters.......Perhaps two sisters married two brothers. 1911 Census - In Poulton Cheshire, Alice Annie Dry states married 20 years, in faint writing and 5 children all alive. Thereafter it seems her son takes over the completion of the Census doc. However, perhaps she meant to write 30 years married.....I cannot find a second marriage for William Dry introducing Alice Annie, I think it's one and the same lady. Whether ANNIE WRIGHT who married JOHN WILLIAM DRY in 1880 in Dist. West Derby is one and the same, it seems you may have to buy the Cert. to unravel the mystery. p.s. 1881 WRIGHT Family - Peter Wright, 48 yrs., Car Owner, has lost wife Charlotte, now married to Mary of Ireland, no sign of Annie (1860) found with parents in 1871. However, brother Theodore Wright born 1864 Everton, is still with Father, Peter. As well, in 1911 daughter CHARLOTTE ELIZABETH COULTER nee DRY is also living in Poulton with new husband RICHARD.....Married 28 August 1910 St. Matthew, Bootle. However the Father's name is different. Father is named as JOHN (could be) WILLIAM AND ANNIE DRY 151 ....St., Occup. Clerk. The Original Entry is in the Liverpool Baptisms 1813-1906 Ancestry. Index states JOHN ANTHONIA DRY and ANNIE DRY. MARRIAGE - JOHN WILLIAM DRY and ANNIE WRIGHT July 1880 West Derby. Perhaps original parents of Charlotte Elizabeth. 3. Hi David, On Ancestry the whole family of the William you were looking at in 1891 has been indexed as Roberts! Assuming you are not on Ancestry I have put in a correction. But that William was born 1860 which is a bit out but not impossible for a 1857 birth. But the entry I and others have found for 1891 is more likely. The birth of William Frederick DRY was registered at West Derby in 1857. He was the son of John and Elizabeth Fredericka DRY. The 1891 census shows him living with his mother and 2 sisters at 2 Lenthall Street Walton. He is described as age 31 a mariner and single. >

    3. Hi David, There are 3 baptisms on FMP for these Dry children at Everton... Edith Ethel 16th January 1884 William Frederick 16th December 1885 Helen Augusta 19th January 1888 In all cases parents are William Frederick and Annie. So, maybe her full name was Alice Anne but she went by the name Annie? She is on the 1911 census as Alice Ann Dry, widowed, living in Cheshire, with 3 of her children William Frederick, Helen Augusta and Dorothy May. Cheers, Jon

    3. Joan Armistead has replied pointing me to the right 1891 census entry for William and Annie thus showing that the 1891 census I referred to in my query was the wrong one. Christine Benson has pointed me to a potential marriage in 1883 and June Dowling has suggested that the birth certificate for one of their children may get me further by proving the mother's maiden name. My thanks to them and to all others who have replied. The 1901 census shows him with wife, Alice Ann, and children the eldest of whom is age 19. I take it that this child was a daughter of Alice by a previous marriage. William died in 1909. I have assumed from this that William and Alice married sometime between 1891 and 1901 although it may be that there was no marriage. Does anyone know of a marriage or anything of this DRY family in Liverpool? David Railton
