    3. Well put, Phil. :) In any case it seems to me that Ancestry have an issue with Microsoft's new '10' version (which does not use Java) It's a standoff. Not the only one's either, I suspect. But all will settle eventually. In the meantime we can all use the/our existing (if any) tree software that we have paid for. Their loss, not ours. 2. Phil Marsden via
    3. I think we all need to take a rational look at the situation. Just because Ancestry are not going to support FTM does mean that we all have to go out and buy new software, if you have version of FTM that you are happy with, that you have used for many years, then nothing has changed - keep with what you have! Yes, you may not be able to sync with the Ancestry website in future, but this will probably be the case if you change your software. If you upgrade your operating system (OS) or change your computer your existing software will probably run OK, if not you can probably set the system to run the program with previous versions of the OS. Someone said about using another program because they "had used it for 30 years," but there is nothing to prevent any other company from ceasing software as Ancestry are doing so you may not be any better off by changing. By far the greatest risk to your data is failure of your hard drive in your computer, if you do not back up frequently to external flash memory / drive / CD, etc., and your HD fails - you will lose everything (no your local computer store or the wizard next door will not be able to get it back for you!!). So back up frequently and keep your original set up discs and you should be OK.

    3. There's no need to do anything at the moment. The ending of support simply means that updates won't be offered and Ancestry won't answer questions about the product. Your Family Tree Maker will continue to work just as it does now. On another list, there are reports that FTM works on all recent version of Windows up to and including 10. So, if you upgrade your computer, you should be able to mov e it to the new machine. -rt_/) ----- Original Message ----- Sent: Wednesday, December 9, 2015 3:03:37 PM Subject: LANCSGEN Digest, Vol 10, Issue 296 Ancestry say they are no longer supporting this soft ware, should I be concerned?? 3. This is one of the reasons I will not put my stuff out on the web. I have used The Master Genealogist for years and will continue to use it even though they are out of business and no longer offer updates. I will cry the day I have to change to a new one. 3. 'Reunion' is a Mac specific desktop programme. It has a huge number of fans, but I was disappointed to find supporting records and documentation couldn't be transferred. I sort of understand why but it's a serious problem if you have a lot of individuals in your tree. You can transfer a GEDCOM. I think the problem with all these programmes is that you can't import all your source material very easily.. If someone knows differently I would love to know. 3. Until you get a new computer that runs a higher Windows program, you should be ok but I'd back up often in case anything goes wrong with the program and you can't get your data for lack of support.  I'd also back up to a Gedcom file so that it can transfer into another program if necessary.    RootsMagic has a great description on how to change from FTM to their program at http://blog.rootsmagic.com/?p=2546 and Heredis, the French program, has a very good offer right now for $15 US.  Not sure of UK price. 3. FTM allows you to export a GEDCOM with media files, so that all of your photos, etc can be imported into Legacy or RootsMagic and presumably others. I Believe sources can also be imported, but I don't actually use them as such. For example, rather than a census "source", I include the full household census data in my notes. 3. I have ued Legacy Family Tree and RootsMagic. Both have free versions and both are very good programmes. However, I have always liked Family Tree Maker the best because of the ease of adding individuals to the tree. I do have my tree online at Ancestry, but it is private. I once tried to download my ancestry tree and I found that the formatting of the notes was all lost. I had extensive notes on some people including census records, Wills, and other items. While I had several paragraphs of notes, the information downloaded as one long run-on sentence. Perhaps they have solved this by now.
