    3. Yes, just to say there are people out there.. I lurk most of the time too.. but always look out for names I recognise and if I can help someone I will. These lists are the best way to find things over and above what is on FMP/Ancestry/FamilySearch etc.. I’m always amazed at how much people know and grateful for the time and help people have given me in the past. 3. Thank you for saying this Mike from Toronto, joining a list like this is so useful and something I always recomend. The list has a real community feel. You have helped me in the past as have other members. There are many lurkers like me, whose lives have got in the way of research, but who still enjoy reading the questions and the answers, where we often learn new things. Nan Bailey Australia

    3. Hi Listers—I’m one of the lurkers on this list. It’s one of the few lists that I still subscribe to and actually get email from. I do scan everything that comes through just in case it’s info I can use. I’m also on Facebook…lots of my life splat out there. For pure research, Facebook is useless. However, I’ve connected with distant cousins I’ve never met and gotten to know them via Facebook. I subscribe to a number of groups and pages. The Facebook group Technology for Genealogy is great for keeping up with what is developing for researchers in the tech world. I use RootsMagic and there’s a Facebook group that has provided a host of hints and solutions I might have otherwise missed. I also subscribe to the Facebook page for a genealogy society I’ve been a member of for 20 plus years. They publish bits that allow me to keep up with what’s going on in Illinois (I live in Florida). So, while I can agree that Facebook is pretty useless for individual research, there are a host of other things that make it useful and worth the time and effort for genealogists. Twitter is the same thing. It moves fast but you can catch wind of developing info/events/etc. as it streams by. I’m still trying to learn to use Twitter effectively. It’s a struggle. I do talk about listservs to younger researchers so they are aware of them. However, with listservs all but dying, it’s kind of a lost cause. That being said, I do appreciate the diehards that keep this list going. 3. Hi there, Do the names of the daughters of James Owen provide any clues? Was there a Martha or an Ellen? Also, if there is no memorial stone  - I wonder if grave registers exist for the particular burial location of James. Sometimes - where there has been a remarriage, both spouses are buried in the grave with their husband/wife. Unfortunately these grave registers are thin on the ground, but where they exist they provide really useful information. They may be held at the church - or at the local archives. Might be worth checking if no-one can find an appropriate marriage to Ellen at the right time. From: T. Wood via <[email protected]> To: LANCSGEN Mailing List <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, 2 February 2016, 23:45 Subject: [LAN] James Owen of Newton in Makerfield I am trying to unravel a mystery concerning James Owen who was born in Newton in Makerfield to Ralph and Alice Owen on 1 Sep 1758.  I have come up with an outline of his life based on church records but with one aspect that I can not reconcile. I initially thought he was married to Martha Norris at St. Mary the Virgin, Prescot 16 Aug 1781 and at that time both were living in Widness about 8 miles south west of Newton.  They had two children christened at St. Helen, Ralph in 1783 and Mary in 1785 after which they moved to Haydock, a bit closer to Newton. They had 5 more children from 1787 to 1798 christened at St. Thomas, Ashton in Makerfield but one complication is that the christening records at both St. Helens and at St. Thomas gave only the father’s name so to this point, the only reference to James’ spouse was the marriage record from Prescot. >From 1803 to 1814 all three of James’ sons were married and were living in Haydock and in 1811 and 1819 two daughters died and were buried at St. Oswald in Winwick. This is where the confusion comes to light in that the burial record gives the parents of both daughters as James and Ellen not Martha. The following are the burial records for both James and Ellen that also indicate that James’ wife was Ellen and not Martha: Burial: 26 May 1822 St Oswald, Winwick, Lancashire, England Ellen Owen - Wife of James Owen Age: 65 Abode: Haydock Buried by: Gs. 3. May I just say that these courses mentioned by Lynne should be an absolute mine of information. I once did an on-line course about 'The Parish Chest' -- best course I have ever taken. I learnt SO much about the workings of the parish and was truly amazed at the different types of records created and - if they do still exist -- what you may be able to find. It is a very, very interesting subject. We tend to confuse 'Parish Records' with 'Parish Registers' (the registers are the baptisms, marriages and burials only.) There are far more records than just those. There is also a book 'The Parish Chest' by W.E.Tate - also interesting. Quite expensive new -- but can be purchased second hand from somewhere like 'Abe Books'. There were a few editions - so go for a later one if you are interested. If you live in the Bolton area it should be well worth you attending. Please note I am NOT related to the tutor -- nor am I on commission!! 1. [LAN] M&LFHS Bolton & District FHSFebruary Meeting, Wednesday February 3rd at 7.30pm
    2. Lynne via
    3. Wednesday February 3rd at 7.30pm: Jacqui Crosby, Senior Archivist, Lancashire Archives, is coming to tell us about "Saving the Hulton Papers for the Lancashire Archives". A report about the campaign to save the Hulton archive and why it is so important. Many will recall the desperate fund raising that the Manchester and Lancashire FHS had a small part in in 2014, to retain this collection intact in Lancashire. The project was thankfully successful and two important collections of documents have been retained in the County Record Office at Preston. The cataloguing will take at least another 6 months with some documents going back to the 12th C and we are thrilled they they are staying near their home. The usual Help Desk, stationery table and recycle tables will also be available. Normal charges will be all MLFHS members free, with tea & coffee also now available £1 each, and none members £1.50 at the door. We are now of course at our new venue of the Old Links Golf Club, Chorley Old Road , Bolton, England BL1 5SU. Our first meeting of the new year held last week was a great success, with 88 attending and I think all will agree a very successful evening. Some inevitable "teething problems" became evident which we expected but all solvable. A report will appear shortly in our newsletter due out at the end of next week http://www.bolton.mlfhs.org.uk/Newsletter.php

    1. Re: [LAN] Ethel WATERWORTH bc 1903

    3. Hi Nivard...are you on every list??? Yes, FMP has finally said we subscribers can look at the data as part of our subs in a few weeks!! As their indexing seems rubbish (some people, outside redaction, whom I know where they were are not appearing!!) once get full access I hope to be able to do delving to unravel a couple of my own family mysteries half remembered by me from whispers by my elders!! If nobody has "lost" Ethel, then 1939 is my best hope of sorting her out. There is no second name/initial on her death...but then poor Murdo may not have known of one. Son born, partner dead...and registration services take him to court for perjury in claiming child was "legitimate" and Ethel was his wife. All no doubt circumstances of WW2. Leigh and Ashton are so close geographically, and within "Greater Manchester" now...here's hoping somebody on the list can tell us the life story of one of the two Ethel's even if to rule her out! I live in hope...!!!
