Hi to all Natchitoches Hunters, I hope that everyone is enjoying the news items that we are putting out from the old days. There are so many more that we are typing up but many of these are a hoot. It's hard to belive some of the things that went on. You also wouldn't belive some of the ads that were listed. Things we take for granted. Like a car and running water. We have a request if you don't mind. If any one out there has any year - any grade - annuals, PLEASE dust them off and type up the classes, sports, and such. If you don't want to type them up, contact me or mom about sending us copies and we will try to get them set up for you. You never know who you might find with sending them out. I will be sending up mine but I'm sorry..... there from the early 80's not quite the history you might be looking for. We thought that these would make good additions to family members who might not know that they have/had a "cousin" in the town and what year. This might give you a handle (as my daughter puts it) a cousin that I can talk to. <G> We are also hunting any marriage bonds/lic to be sent out. These provide lots of info also such as not only who married but witnesses and such. Any ideas from anyone on what else might be helpful??? Also what does everyone think so far of the items coming across. Take care to all and Happy "Diggin" Kay Brown Co - List Owner Natchitoches & Grant Parish

Jail Break - Pennina Brothers Source: Natchitoches Times Dec 20, 1912 Submitted By: Kay Thompson - Brown JAIL DELIVERY It was discovered on Monday morning that sometime during Sunday night Geo. And Joe Pennina, two of the Italian charged with the murder of Joe Mondelio, Sr. and the wholesale shooting of the Mondelio family and home at Powhatan last September, had sawed tow bars from one of the West windows of the jail, reached the ground by climbing down a line of blankets tied together and made good their escape. Telegrams were sent to all points in an effort to apprehend the fugitives; but so far all efforts have been futile. After the escape of the Pinninas, a diligent search was made of the jail. Tow pieces of broken hack saw were found on the person of HK Wiley, the Boleyn forgen and embezzler. Evidence was found showing that the he had commenced to work on the bars of his department of the jail, with some instrument. This led to the discovery of the saws which were sewed in false soles of his shoes. Wiley has since been placed in the cells and the privileges and courtesies previously extended him withdrawn. Wiley was guilty of forgery, embezzlement and robbing the mail while in a confidential capacity at Boleyn. He was convicted in the Federal Court on the mail charge, served his sentence in the Atlanta penitentiary, and is now here on State charges. It is thought that Wiley, who is quite a king among the prisoners, advised and assisted the Pinninas and that it was with his saw that they cut the jail bars.

East Natchitoches Notes Source: Natchitoches Times Dec 3, 1909 Submitted By: Kay Thompson - Brown Quite unique entertainment was given last Friday evening at the residence of RT Enloe at which a large crowd was entertained at "Aunt Dina's Quilting Party." each person had an individual quilt to piece for 30 minutes or more and the gay colors and arrangement made a pretty collection of miniature quilts. Prizes were won for the girls by Miss Nettie Bird and for the boys by Mr. Harry Kranson. It was a close contest between the girls, but for the boys the booby was certainly won by Mr. Edward Metoyer. Following this was a neatly arranged play entitled "The Rival Brothers," illustrated in tableaux and many compliments were passed on the handsome "solider brother" who surrendered so nobly to his younger brother who was a jealous suitor of the girl they both loved. Refreshments were immediately served after the tableaux which gave us an hour or more to enjoy the music and swing our best fellow in the merry old games we used to play at school. Her's to the merry crowd who are always young. Just give us a chance for this holiday fun. "Youngster."
East Natchitoches Notes Source: Natchitoches Times Jan 11, 1909 Submitted By: Kay Thompson - Brown Our town is slowly but surely improving. Mr. JT Sandlin is repainting and repairing his residence and Mr WD Hagewood, of Bunkie, is preparing to build a nice cottage near RT Enloe's residence. There will be several other houses built during the year. There were quite a number of visitors in town during the Christmas holidays. Among them were Rev. JA Miller and sister of Patterson; WO Averette and wife of Winnfield; Earl and Rufus Averette, of Big Sandy, Texas and Mrs RL Stewart, of Vernon, Texas. Miss Maud Husband is visiting her mother this week. WP Phillips and Ira O'Quin, after spending the holidays with friends and relatives, have returned to their work. Miss Kate Averette is visiting her sister Mrs WA Stamper this week. CJ O'Quinn and family spend Sunday at Derry. The East Natchitoches string band serenaded Saturday night. The music was a sweet and enjoyed by all. There are two things our citizens should do. First, help vote the railroad tax. Second, do every thing possible to elect our neighbor for district judge. Let's all work for him. "Every little bit helps." A Friend
