Hello Everyone, There has been an update to the Martin Cemetery which helps to further identify some of the burials. Nelda Liles has submitted a document, "Donation of Land by Joseph Martin to Minor Grandchildren" which gives more information on the names. Look for more cemeteries to be added to the Natchitoches website in the next few days. Glenda Myers
Hi all, Am looking for information on my grgrgrandfather, William Washington CARROLL, (I think his middle name is Washington). Not sure of his birth date but he was born in VA. He was married to Sarah (Sheridan) QUINN before ca.1824 and had three known children, Madison, Caroline and Eliza. Would appreciate hearing from anyone also researching these families. Marriage place and all children probably born in Sabine or Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana. Thank you. Shirley Holmquist
Hello Friends, Yesterday I received in the mail a copy of my g-g-grandfathers Soldiers Application for Pension. One of the questions that was asked on the application was where was he at the surrender ? His answer was that he was at Natchitoches at the July , Puly , or Poney Springs. Does anyone know about where this Springs would be located and it's correct name ? The handwriting is not clear but I do believe that the first letter of the Springs is a P or J. Also, I have 2 more questions: #1) Does someone have knowledge of a cave in the hills or woods around Robeline ? #2) Does someone have knowledge of CAREY'S BATTALION (Company D) that was from Many--Sabine Parish Louisiana and later consolidated with the CRESCENT REGIMENT at Shreveport,La. ? I would appreciate all the help that I can get to resolve these questions. One last note. There is a lot of good information on these Soldiers Applications. I sent my request to the State Archives in Baton Rouge,La. and I had my copy of the application within 7 days. I was very pleased with the quick response and thrilled with the 10 pages of information on the application --- the cost was $5. Jackie Wyatt Wiltcher
Submitted by: Danille Weaver Faccone RUBIN KEY Natchitoches Times June 5, 1914 The saddest news that ever crept into a home came to the home of Mr. M. C. Key, May 19th. His loving son Rubin, while riding the Weaver fur log train, fell between cars and was killed. Rubin was a loving boy and always met his friends with a smile and oh how sad to part with such a loved one. Again we hope to meet his smiling face where all is joy and never sadness. He leaves his aged parents, four brothers and four sisters, besides many friends to miss him. His body was followed by his weeping family and many friends to the Roberts Cemtery. Brother Whatley of Provencal conducted the burial services. Oh how sad it was to see him laid in the cold and silent ground while they sang the sweet song "Will You Miss Me". He leaves a place vacant in his home which never more can be filled and the voice we love is stilled. God help his aged parents, brothers and sisters to bear their sorrows and to know that he has now joined the angel band is our prayer. The new products are part of a plan to simplify genealogical research, making it faster and easier to access vital information and resources. This "opening of the library doors" will begin in April 1998 with the release of a new software program, the Family History SourceGuide, and two new resource files on CD: the 1851 British Census Records (three counties), and the Australian Vital Records Index (1788-1905). Family History SourceGuide is the first automated Windows product of its kind for the Church to compile more than 150 research guides available at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah. "SourceGuide makes starting the research process faster, easier, and more enjoyable," explains Steve Fox, product manager of SourceGuide. It's like having your very own reference librarian in the convenience of your home." Users type in a place where their ancestor lived, and what they would like to learn (i.e., sources to check to find a birthdate/place, marriage, adoption, occupation, immigration, military and living relative information). While the product will not show information about individuals, it will list the types of records and sources needed to find the requested information. The CD, produced by the Family History Department of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is designed for those who know basic information about their ancestors, but now need to search original sources to complete their personal records. "This is the first time we've automated knowledge about how to do genealogy," Fox said. "In the past we've been limited in our ability to share our reference expertise with people, but now they can have an automated tool in their homes to guide them in their research." This product suits both the amateur and researcher. The novice will find information on where to start, what to do, and how to access a variety of different records. A glossary of terms defines unfamiliar research and genealogical terms. The experts, who generally specialize in a particular locality, will find guides for places outside of their expertise. Many of the guides available in SourceGuide were first published nearly a decade ago to facilitate use of the Family History Library Catalog which indexes the vast records made available through the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah. This new CD now combines these documents into one automated product for general use. Many records described in SourceGuide can be accessed through Family History Centers located around the globe. These mini-libraries of genealogical information are staffed by volunteers who can assist patrons with research and provide access to resources from the Family History Library. Addresses of more than 1,000 major Family History Centers, helpful libraries, and archives are included. Since 1894, the Church has officially gathered and organized genealogical information. More recently, data has been available in the Family History Library, the world's largest reservoir of genealogical information. It offers access to more than 2 million microfilms; 700,000 microfiche; and 274,000 books. SourceGuide gives a comprehensive perspective of these worldwide sources. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- - - African Ancestored Genealogy Discussion - - To unsubscribe, email: Majordomo@MsState.Edu - - In body of message: unsubscribe afrigeneas - - - - Afrigeneas archives: http://www.msstate.edu/listarchives/afrigeneas/ - -------------------------------------------------------------------------

Campti Notes Source: Natchitoches Times Sept 23, 1910 Submitted By: Kay Brown Campti, Louisiana, Sept. 20 --- The Campti High School opened today with a good attendance of 100, and fine prospects of an increase of twenty - five. On account of much sickness in the country, attendance fell a little short of expectations. This school is gradually improving every year, and will soon equal any in the State. The new local board escorted Mr. AE Bath superintendent of the parish, in an automobile to the building, where he delivered an address on education. Mr. Sellers, principal of the school, gave some advice and outlined the work for the year in a very impressive manner. T.K. Giddens, president of the board of trustees gave a lengthy talk stating that the board had formed themselves into a boosting club, and that the school would have to grow if hot air and mountain scenery would do any good. Misses Era and Leta Perot left Sunday for Natchitoches, where they will attend the State Normal. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Prudhomme and daughter Aneta left Sunday for Natchitoches, where Aneta will attend the Normal. Miss Louise Prudhomme left Saturday for Laplace, where she will teach this session. I am trying to find the family of a LUCY ASWELL living in the Ruston, LA area. She is possibly related to the surname; SHARP, MCCORD, GOODWIN, GAHAGAN, TUCKER, possibly the Brown & Sibley names also. This name was on a recorded cassette of my grandmother Bertie Viola Tucker, talking about her mother (Minnie C. McCord) and the fact that Irene B. Goodwin and Lucy Aswell were her mom's cousins'. Any info would be appreciated. Carol Hurley
