I am interested in knowing where our FLEMINGS are buried: Barthelemy FLEMING, his wife, Marie Constanza; Edouard (Edward) FLEMING; Richard FLEMING. They lived in the Campti area, I believe. I understand there is a FLEMING cemetery near Marthaville. Does anyone have a cemetery list which shows these names? Thank you. Judy LeBlanc
Hi Folks, Thought that I would send a couple of items all on one message for you. There is a bank robbery, a wedding, a party, & a high school meeting on this one. Hope that you have fun & find some new (or I should say old) relatives & maybe some history on the area. I seperated each item with a line & put the date it appeared in the paper right above the article. Happy "Diggen" & Take care till next time out. Kay Brown Co-List Owner Campti News Items Source: Natchitoches Times Submitted By: Kay Thompson - Brown April 8, 1921 CITIZENS BANK OF CAMPTI ROBBED People passing the Citizens Bank of Campti, before banking hours on Monday morning noticed the door open but thought that the janitor was cleaning up and it was only when the officials arrived that it was found that the bank had been robbed during the night. Taken was $298.45 in cash and about $100.00 worth of jewelry were taken as the burglars failed to open the safe. The vault door was blown off and the small amount of cash taken from a shelf and jewelry from safety boxes in the vault. Evidently the burglars were afraid that the noise of the explosion had aroused the town as they did not open the safe and so missed $20,000 worth of Liberty Bonds and other securities in the bank's safe. Three strangers seen in Campti on Sunday but who were missing on Monday are supposed to have been the robbers. Two Campti boys who passed the bank just before two o'clock on Monday morning noticed three men near the bank but it was too dark to get a good look at them. Sheriff J.W. Payne was notified and went to the scene of the robbery but no clue to the robbery has been found. A peculiar instance was the finding that the bloodhound in the jail yard here had been poisoned Sunday night and it is thought that the thieves put the hound out of the way before robbing the bank. ================== April 22, 1921 CAMPTI Cloutier Hotel was the scene of much merriment Thursday night when a "tacky party" was given by Mr. and Mrs. Rene Cloutier for the High School teachers, who were leaving after the grade school closed. Misses Ivy Tauzin, Lela Rogers and Blanche Weams. Owing to the inclemency of the weather the crowed was not a large as expected but those who braved the weather were well paid in laughter. Decorations of the spacious lobby were cabbage leaves and Irish potatoes and soap boxes for chairs. Each costume vied in attractive absurdity, Miss Ivy Tauzin was voted the prize. Mrs. Cloutier, the amiable little hostess of the social hour left nothing undone to make the occasion a happy enjoyable one. The grades of the High School closed Friday and the grade teachers Misses Ivy Tauzin, Lela Rogers, and Blanch Weams left for their respective homes on Saturday. Rumor says "Miss Tauzin is to teach a school all her own, were many morns" she has been teaching here six years and has filled the position with great satisfaction and her sweet, genial, gentle disposition has endeared her to all, who regret her leaving but wish her all that's's good and best in her future undertaking. ========== Feb 24, 1922 A marriage of great interest which took place Thursday morning at 8 o'clock Nuptial Mass was that of Mr. Joe Maricelli and Miss Lillian Barberouse. Tho' no invitations were issued the church was filled with admiring friends of both parities. To the strains of Mendelashon's wedding march played by Mrs. Frank Gallaspy the bride and her mother, Mrs. Paul Barberouse, walked up the aisle and met the groom with his attendant, his brother, Jules Maricelli, at the foot of the altar, there to plight their troth and according to the beautiful impressive ritual of the Catholic church Father Pluts pronounced them husband and wife after which the nuptial mass was celebrated. This mass call special blessings upon the married couple and continues the solemn nuptial ceremonies. During the singing of the register Mrs. Earl Perot sang expressively "O Promise Me". Appropriate hymns were sung during the mass. Presiding at the organ was Mrs. Edward Fredieu (Mena Maricelli). The bride wore a handsome brown silk canton crepe embroidered in henna with a heavy fur hat, shoes and gloves to match. She is of petite figure and her rose complection blending with her attire made a picture of loveliness. The bride is a high school graduate, has been teaching for several years and is a young lady of sweet and gentle manner. The groom is the youngest son of the late William Maricelli and has been valuable assistance to his mother in managing the farm since his father's death. He is quiet, painstaking, industrious, young man, with a jolly, amiable disposition. Mr. and Mrs. Maricelli left on the evening train for the Southern part of the state and on their return will be at home in the Maricelli residence on their plantation. They were the recipients of many lovely and useful presents. ======== Dec 15, 1922 The young men of Campti met Wednesday afternoon, December 6 at seven-thirty and organized a C.Y.M.C. The object of the organization is to participate in athletics out of high school, and to assist in building a gymnasium at the school. The following officers were elected: Clyde Corley, president; Ernest Gillen, vice president; Floyd Cramer, secretary and W.D. Boyd, treasurer. The club will meet every Thursday afternoon at 7 o'clock at the High School building. The four senior girls and Floyd Cramer with the help of several teacher, gave a feast in honor of the seventeenth birthday of their classmate, Ernest Gillen, Monday, December 11. The menu consisted of cakes, chicken, fruit salad, dressing, candies, sandwiches, fruits and chocolate. Those enjoying the feast were; Seniors Ernest Gillen, Ezra Buswell, Floyd Cramer, Camille Wimberly, Sam Brown, Sylvia Parliament and Eva Hammett; teacher Mr. and Mrs. R.A. Wagley, Mrs. Hart, Jr, Mrs. Truly, Misses Long, Hill, Aaron, and Colton. A good time was reported by everyone attending. Cake was served to the Juniors by the Seniors in the same afternoon. Jackie, I'm not absolutely sure, but I believe that Boleyn was a small community about three miles north of Marthaville on the Texas & Pacific railroad. It was about where Boline Rd. (Parish Road 589) crosses the line between Natchitoches and Sabine parishes and near the intersection with Strahan Rd. Good luck! Hi, I am hoping that someone can tell me the location of the community BOLEYN. According to information that I recently reviewed it is located between Robeline and Marthaville. If possible, I would like to know a more specific area. I 'm famililar with the road between Robeline and Marthaville so maybe I' ll be able to recognize the description of the BOLEYN area . I've been trying to locate this community for some time but I was looking in Sabine and not Natchitoches Parish. Thanks and God bless, Jackie WYATT Wiltcher
Good Morning Everyone: I think you'll find this new file submitted by Nelda Liles interesting. It is "Natchitoches Parish, LA: State Spelling Contestants of 1915" - taken from the April 30, 1915 issue of The Natchitoches Times. It lists over 60 schools in the parish with names of students who scored 90% or above. It can be found on "Natchitoches Parish Miscellaneous" on the main page at the Natchitoches Parish LaGenWeb Project website. Take a look. There's lots of surnames I recognize on the list and Nelda has added further notes on some of the students at the end of the list. http://www.rootsweb.com/~lanatchi/sch1915.htm Glenda Myers

Just wanted to let everyone know that I just finished uploading The Oak Grove Cemetery. This is not a complete listing of this cemetery. Kay and her husband Jerry Brown read the cemetery some time back and did not complete it. They have not been back to Natchitoches to complete the reading. Danelli Weaver Faccone has gone out to the cemetery and video taped it and is mailing it to Kay so that she can finish the listings. If anyone has any information on the history of Oak Grove Church or any history of the families buried there, please email either Kay or myself so that we can up date the file. Gaytha

Thought I would pass this along on the mailing list. Gaytha The Alexandria Daily Town Talk, May 09, 1998 Old museum to come under state's jurisdiction NATCHITOCHES -- The history of northern Louisiana and Natchitoches' role in that history will come to life when the Natchitoches Parish Old Courthouse Museum becomes a state museum. Last week, Gov. Mike Foster signed the law that places the museum under the state museum's jurisdiction as of July 1. And although the director of the state museums is "very excited" about the additional museum, he said dramatic changes will not occur immediately. James Sefcik, state museum director, said the quality of the exhibits will be upgraded, and some improvements will be made to the interior of the museum, which is currently located on the first floor of the Old Courthouse. Once a curator is hired, Sefcik said the museum will be open six days a week.
Hi, I am looking for information about John Carnahan (b. circa 1778-9 in Pennsylvania), who married Maria Harrison at Washington, Mississippi in 1808-9, and participated in the Battle of New Orleans in 1815. He later settled in the Natchitoches/Rapides Parish area near Boyce. I need to determine his parents' names, based on documentary evidence, if any. He was father to William Francis Carnahan. Thanks. Keep up the good work. Norman Carnahan carnahan@rice.edu ___________________ Norman F. Carnahan

I am looking for any information regarding BEASLEY, Mathias. I know he purchased land in Natchitoches Parish 4-1-1843 but I have no information about where he came from. There is much information on Mathias' descendants but nothing is known of who his wife was, what happened to her, and were there any children other than James A. BEASLEY. It appears that Mathias brought his son James to Lotus when James was around 12 years of age. James stayed in the Lotus area all his life and many of his descendants remained in the Natchitoches Parish area. Thanks in advance for your help. Carolyn Dodd Cade calocade@kalama.com
The Natchitoches Times Aug 15, 1913 CLEAR LAKE Mr. Jessey Frederick, our new postmaster, received a notice for the department at Washington D. C., of an increase of our mail to twice a week. It is due to the good management that Mr. Frederick has given the ovvice. Mr. Albert Frederick of Gorum spent a couple of days with his brother, Jessey Frederick, this week. People of this neighborhood are busy canning and preserving fruit. It is only a question of time when all the fruit in this neighboorhood will be put up.
