The index at www.scotlandspeople lists just two James Quin(n)s born 1889 plus or minus five years and died in Motherwell, one in 1974 and the other in 1983. Both those are less than 50 years ago, so the certificates are not available to view on the Scotland's People web site. If he didn't die in Motherwell, and assuming no creative spelling variations, he could be one of 26 others who died in Lanarkshire, or 35 who died in the rest of Scotland, all aged at least 30. If I were looking for him, I would look at both those certificates, and then I'd look for corresponding births, in the hope that one of them was born in Scotland. There were 79 births of James Quin(n)s in Scotland between 1885 and 1895, but you'd have an exact date of birth from the death certificate(s) so you'd only have to check one, or at most two, years. If that failed (i.e. neither was born in Scotland), I would then try searching for family, hoping that one had a daughter Beatrice and the other did not. There were 10 Bea* Quin(n)s born in Scotland between 1914 and 1970, but again you would have to send away for all these certificates because they are more recent than 100 years ago, so they are not available to download on the Scotland's People web site. I suggest that you consider hiring a professional searcher, which should work out cheaper (and much quicker!) than sending for sheaves of certificates.
