You can use http://www.freecen.org.uk to look up the family in the 1841 & 1851 census records. This site does not have the later census records transcribed. This should give you the names/ages of living children as of 1841/1851. A search in http://www.familysearch.org for children of Peter Smith & Jane Pollock gives only two official records. Peter Smith b 20 Dec 1837 Old Monkland Andrew Smith b 10 Jan 1840 Old Monkland User submitted tree records give the following additional children born in Old Monkland: Thomas b 1830 Robert b 1832 Agnes b 1834 Jane b 1841 Margaret b 1843 The 1851 census adds two additional children: Marion b 1845 Andrew b 1848 There does not seem to be records for these births in the Old Parish Records which is the main source for BMDs prior to 1855 in Scotland. This is usually due to lost records or a move by the family to one of the dissenting churches. To look for deaths and marriages after 1855 you should go to http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk which is the source for Scotland birth, marriage, death & census records and many others. It is a pay to view/download site, but the rates are very reasonable and the images are great. I should also point out that there is a partially documented family tree (Gibson Family) on ancestry.com for the family. Be careful as there are other poorly documented ones there also.
