G'day Ken , Further to your email to George about your RUSSELLs, I am interested in the SELKRIGs etc from the Carluke/Dalserf/Cambusnethan area. Because of the prolific entries of SELKIRK, I have been unable to put my line together, having a few candidates with William and John families. The specific family is Elizabeth SELKRIG born 1739 Dalserf who married John DAVIDSON in 1754 at Cambusnethan. I have her parents as William SELKRIG and Isobell WATSON but am unable to find marriage details for them. Would you have any record of this family or suggest where they might just fit into your line? Many Thanks, Bill Melbourne, Oz On 8/08/2010 2:18 AM, Ken Harrison wrote: > George, > > Thank you for your information, and perspective on the area. > > You say that you live in Carluke, and that your family has lived in the area > for a long time. Bill, I have found this name spelled Selkrig, Selkrigg, Selridge, Selkrdge, Selchreg, Selchrig, Selrig, Selrigg, Serchrig, and sometimes as Selkirk. The earliest I have found on my direct line was a John who was married about 1714 in Carstairs. He died in Carstairs c1726 and his children (Susanna, William [1], James, Janet, William [2]) were all born there. I have not found the siblings of my ancestor, his daughter Susanna (b. 1711), after their births there between 1714 and 1724. Others in the area who I have not yet been able to link to my line are: * William, born in 1500s, died c1630 "in Kirkbank", Commissariot of Lanark; widow was "Ellison Anderson" * Martha, baptized 1648 at Lanark, and John, baptized 1659 at Lanark, children of Patrick * John, living at Ravenstruther in 1673 at birth of daughter Lillias * Thomas, living at "Thillauch" in 1676 at baptism of dau Lillias in Carstairs * Margaret, born c 1755, died 1829 at Carstairs If anyone can identify any of the above, or link them to any others, please let me know. G'day Bob, Thanks for those entries, but I already have the BVRI2. My problem is that there has been a widespread use of the much more common alternative of SELKIRK which makes the wheat sorting very difficult. Should there be no positive assistance, then I will have to resort to a parish by parish check to try putting all variants of the name into family units. Thanks for your interest. George F Black's 'The Surnames of Scotland' says, "Selkrig - See Selkirk". Most of the early references he cites are variations on Selkrig rather than Selkirk, and he also cites one spelled Celcraig. So it's quite possible that some of your Selkrigs are listed as Selkirk and vice versa. Anne
