Industrial schools were set up to provide training for boys (and girls) who were in danger of falling by the wayside, so to speak, because they had been abandoned by their parents, or orphaned, and allowed to roam the streets. 'Alexander Reid' was hardly an uncommon name but if all else fails you may be able to get hold of the records pertaining to this Alexander which may have details of his family background. Hello Helen You could be right about Alexander being a home child , I found an Alexander Reid in the 1881 census for Canada Household: He is a few years older but we have to allow for age being out the instance shown he is the same age as Naomi . When he married in Bridgeton ,he was the same age as his wife. It is worth looking at. The Mitchell had the Poorhouse House Records and informed me that to enter the Poorhouse you had to state the Place of birth and other information . Cambusnethan is digitized up to 1901 I think it said The one I am seeking in Cambusnethan had given the wrong father and only got his mothers name right Phoebe, that is the name he gave his daughter. I traced him back to West Bromwich to a family who had lost a son who just disappeared his age was right plus occupation.
