Smyllum was originally know as Smellum, built between 1759 and 1763 by Dr. William Smellie, often called the first male midwife or obstetrician. He was born in Lesmahagow in 1697 and by 1720 was a surgeon and apothecary in Lanark, acquiring about 9 acres of land to the south of town. He practised medicine in London from 1739 to 1759, when he retired to Lanark and built up the estate. After his death in 1763, the name of the estate was changed to Smyllum and in 1792 it was purchased by Sir William Honeyman, later Lord Armadale. Later still it was purchased by the Catholic Church for a school. I believe that it operated as a hospital until the 1960s. It is now a country park, housing estate, farm & golf course. The main building was in ruins when I last saw it in 1996.
