Thanks Frank, I am looking for much earlier ones, mid 1800s. Do you know if there is anything available? I was apprenticed as a Marine Engine Fitter from 1951 to 1956. The records date from ..1904-69: minutes, financial records, cost and job books, wages and apprentice records, valuation books, note books, papers. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/nra/searches/subjectView.asp?ID=B5810 Good Hunting ! I figured that you were but you could search the Archives and see what they have. I was only giving you an example of what could be found using Aitchison Blair Clydebank. Put the company name he worked for in the search box of the Archives and see what comes up. There area quite a few, each is trade specific representing various guilds. For Glasgow the Mitchell (library) has some as does the University of Glasgow and of course the NAS. Most cover many, many years and requires someone look up the information if you don't have the specific year which is time consuming and if there is a fee associated with the search, somewhat expensive. Some registers simply list the name, date and who they apprenticed under, some of the 18th century records that I have seen include sponsors and their Parish which in most instances is the father so it helps identify family. It really depends on the trade. I know the NAS is working on indexing the print trade, there was talk a few years ago about indexing other trades but I'm unsure if that's still the plan. Cheers!!! Thanks Don, That's helpful and I'll check. Had forgotten about the guilds and now remember when at the Mitchell many years ago finding the plumber I was interested in (step gr gr grandfather) was admitted to his Father in Law's Guild. Will have to search my mountain of paper! Just wish I could find plumbers in Aberdeen!
