    3. Hello Frank, Yes, toll keepers did move around. I have James Whyte & wife Jane Callan, both from Crawfordjohn, who were at Jarg Toll, West Calder in 1851, Roundy Hill Toll, Glamis in 1861, and Jane widowed at the Toll House, Eassie & Nevay in 1871. Interestingly, Jane was the toll keeper, not her husband. Janet

You can often recognise toll cottages because many of them have windows set at an angle of 45 degrees to the direction of the road, and/or the main walls of the house, so that the toll keeper had a good view of any approaching traffic. http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/919033 http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/717854 http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/281598 are just some examples.
