    3. Hi ... I wonder if he was involved in the Carluke trip to NZ - about 1863 - in the 'Aboukir' - following the NZ goldrush ? Large numbers of 'younger folk' some related, some not left here with the Brownlee sawmillers trip to the Pelorus Sound ... I note that he was part of the Kirkton ( Carluke UP Church, Station Road, Carluke ) and perhaps his wife's 'Forrest' families were those of Robert Forrest, Grain Miller at the Low Mill and, with the Brownlees, one of the founders of that Church and main participant in the Pelorus expeditions. Some of the younger Forrest sons went out to the goldrush ( prior to the Aboukir trip ), and it was their enthusiasm for the quality of NZ timber etc that started the later Carluke emigrations. Some of the Forrests returned to Scotland, some stayed. The Low Mill families were later farmers and now run the Forrest Estate wineries near Marlborough, NZ. As I recall, it was one of the Youngs ( ? Owen ? ) who was involved in erecting a memorial to the Carluke emigrants in that expedition at Carluke, NZ -or was it at the Blackball Sawmill site at Havelock ? One of the Brownlees married a lady from the farm ( ? Hill of ) Kilncadzow ( pronounced Kil-kay-gee here ) whose family were also lime quarriers up there. Maybe some exploration of the cemetery records for Havelock and the Rai Valley histories ( see Havelock Museum ) may help. You may also want to check Claire Smith's work at the Brownlee Family site on :- www.brownlee.com.au If you would want a pic and the history of Kirkton Church, Carluke,( founded 1835 ?) let me know - we're still an active and lively congregation .... ! BTW : Just remembered - is there not a house , named 'Havelock' in Douglas Street, Carluke (here) that once belonged to the Youngs or the Martins ??? ( needs more research ).
