Just to say... we likely have found our man...National Archives Scotland records - 1855 David YOUNG was tried for forgery, outlawed and put to the horn. Hence he spent the rest of his days 'fugitived' and died before the 1881 census! I love the naughty ones... and thank you to all who offered suggestions. Nyle James
