Hello List I am new to the list but have been researching my husband's family tree for a long time. Hello Barbara It depends on why they left Ireland. My maternal Irish (Protestant) GG Grandparents were married in Glasgow in 1840. My paternal Irish (Catholic) GG Grandparents arrived in Scotland in the mid-1850s. T C Smout in his book, "A Century of the Scottish People" says: "The census of 1841 listed 125,000 Irish-born individuals in Scotland and in the famine of 1848 there were up to 1,000 new arrivals a week from Ireland into Glasgow......The vast majority of migrants arrived from the Province of Ulster". As far as I am aware there are no records of migration from Ireland to Scotland, such as passenger lists. Many Irish records including the earlier Irish censuses were lost in a fire in Dublin in the early 1920s. So looking for Irish ancestors in the early 1800s is not easy, if not impossible. What is available can be found on the Irish Family History Foundation's site at http://ifhf.brsgenealogy.com/ It is a pay site, and in my opinion, is not cheap. The charges are in Euros. You can also find the Irish Civil Registration indices on the Family Search site at http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#c=1408347;p=collectionDetails Rhoda ----- Original Message ----- From: "Barbara Black" <barbarablack@blueyonder.co.uk> To: <lanark@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, January 14, 2010 4:15 PM Subject: [Lanark] Irish Families in Old Monkland > Hello List > > I am new to the list but have been researching my husband's family > tree for a long time. Hello Barbara I have been waiting to see what sort of responses you received to your request. To my amazement several years ago I found my great grandfather was born in Ireland - no county given. Not Glasgow, where my grandfather and family, including my father were born and raised. I presumed that it was Northern Ireland, because the family was protestant. And there I have been stuck ever since. I'm afraid I can't offer any advice about where you go next. But I strongly suggest you read a book called simply IRISH by John Burrowes. I obtained it on the internet. It tells a graphic story of the movement of hundreds, nay thousands of people between Northern Ireland and Scotland in the first half of the 19th century. It is very easy to read and is a harrowing tale. But I'm afraid offers no clues about your actual ancestors. Research in Ireland - compared with Scotland - is like a huge brick wall.
