    1. [Lanark] Scottish regiment cap badge mystery solved

    3. Good afternoon, all, on the Lanark and Wigtownshire lists. I've been trying for the longest time to find out what Scottish regiment my mother's young brother James Cruikshank Brown served in in WWI. I checked the Scottish army badges online, but the photo I had of the badge was off kilter and I couldn't match it too well. The badge had a square of tartan behind it, but as a few Scottish regiments also have this, including the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders (my brother's regiment), I still couldn't be sure which regiment he had served with. I then went ferreting around Google and found a POSTAL address to write to in Stirling. I received a very nice letter from an Alan Kostric who identified the badge as the H.L.I. (Highland Light Infantry.). Eureka! Alan, of course, suggested that if I had James Cruikshank Brown's army number that would help to find out where he was posted. (I don't.) However, as he died after leaving the army they would not have any records of him. He hoped that this would help me in my search for answers to keep James Cruikshank Brown's memory alive "as so many are now forgotten." The website for Scottish Regimental Cap Badges www.regimentalcapbadges.co.uk This is going to the Lanark and Wigtownshire lists as I do not have some e-mail addresses. Many thanks, therefore, to Nivard Ovington, Frank McGonigal, Jim Flemintgon and others on the Lanark list, my relatives, as well as the "resident genealogy whiz" on the Wigtown site, Malcolm Lockerbie, who tried to identify the Scottish regimental cap badge for me. Thank you everyone, for all the time and effort you took to try to identify the cap badge. The next move is to try to find out if he belonged to the Glasgow H.L.I. (the same as my father), and whether this little nugget of information will help further when I go to the National Archives U.K. One more question" Was the toorie on the H.L.I. bunnet, red, green, navy blue or khaki?
