Dear Maisie, June asked me to send you the following message on July 4th: "Thanks for everything. Love, June" I am sending the message to you early because this morning she moved on to her eternal home. With sympathy, Lyn Hardin -------------------------------------------------------------------- To Lanark listers: Jenny Myers and I had a connection with June McCarthy through this Lanark list and it is with sadness that we now learn of her death. June came from Weaver Street, Townhead, Glasgow, just a few "closes" up from where Jenny and my great-forebears lived. She had kindly sent us a photograph of this old tenement, sadly no more. She then had a friend of hers take a photograph for me of another tenement where my mother's family lived when they returned from South Africa, also right in the centre of the oldest part of Glasgow. She also forwarded some photographs of a tenement on the Rottenrow, up from the school I attended, and which was a carbon copy of the tenement in which I was born in (the) Townhead. She, like me, knew )the) Townhead like the back of our hands. For Jenny and me, we remember June with gratitude not just as a "lurker" on this Lanark site, but as a treasure, and a current and past historian of Glasgow. Maisie Birth is a beginning and death a destination And life is a journey: >From childhood to maturity and youth to age; >From innocence to awareness and ignorance to knowing; >From foolishness to desecration and then perhaps to wisdom. >From weakness to strength or from strength to weakness and often back again; >From health to sickness and we pray to health again. >From offense to forgiveness from loneliness to love from joy to gratitude from pain to compassion from grief to understanding from fear to faith. >From defeat to defeat to defeat until looking backwards or ahead We see that victory lies not at some high point along the way but in having made the journey step by step a sacred pilgrimage. Birth is a beginning and death a destination And life is a journey; A sacred journey to life everlasting
