Margaret there is no official line. Generally people consider the Highland fault as the dividing line but since large parts of the Highlands lie to the south-west and east of it, that is a geological definition only. Generally people would consider upland Stirlingshire and Perthshire to be part of the Highlands but then is that part of Aberdeenshire or Banffshire or indeed Morayshire which lie to the north and west of the Cairngorms part of the Highlands? Goodness only knows. The Highlands for administrative purposes includes the counties of Argyll, Inverness, Ross, Sutherland, Caithness and Nairn. Generally people would add the western half of Moray too. That is probably as useful as a chocolate teapot but it is the best I can offer. As someone living 40 miles north of Inverness, to me the idea of a glen 30 miles from Glasgow as forming part of the Highlands is nonsense but it wasn't in the 18th century.
