I do not know, except that McWhinnie sounds Irish...and how right I was: http://www.surnamedb.com/Surname/McWhinnie Now how it turned around to be McKenzie is a puzzle. McKenzie is sometimes pronounced McKenjie or McKengie (as in sengie, as in the ing in sing/sang/song/bring, with the ing being soft, if I'm explaining myself). McKengie could then have been softened to McWhinnie. All a huge guess, of course. I have an line from Fife which started out as Kingo, changed to Kenzie and then McKenzie. The name changed with the language used and the "ear" of the recorder. I just wrote to Ruth Enns as her McWhinnie (it’s supposedly an Irish name) somehow became McKenzie. It’s possible that McKenzie was pronounced differently depending on where one came from: McKingie (as in McKinsie --- instead of Mc KEnsie), McKingie (as in McKingy---stingy) then McKinghie as in McKinghay). I’m sure there were other pronunciations but those are the ones I heard most commonly in Glasgow where I grew up.
