    3. Why don't you give it a try yourself? Almost all the surviving original records can be viewed at Scotland's People www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, which is the genealogy web site of the National Records of Scotland (NRS) which was formed by the amalgamation of the National Archives of Scotland (NAS) and General Register Office for Scotland (GROS). It's pay-per-view, but it costs less than a cup of coffee to view and download an original certificate or census page. (The corollary of this is that asking someone else to look up a certificate for you is effectively asking them to spend their own money on your behalf. Many people are happy to do this, but you need to be aware what you are asking for!) Married women don't lose their maiden names in Scotland, which is why, for instance, you usually find the mother's maiden surname in the pre-1855 baptism registers. In legal documents a married woman's name is always shown as "xxx yyy or zzz" wher xxx is her given name(s), yyy her maiden surname and zzz is her husband's surname. Thus in Scotland, the deaths of married women are listed under both their maiden surname and their husband's surname. It should not be difficult to find the death of Elizabeth Lindsay **OR** Hamilton. (Don't try looking for "Elizabeth Lindsay Hamilton". The usage xxx yyy zzz is an American usage and does not occur in Scotland." I see from the 'Community indexed' International Genealogical Index at www.familysearch.org that James Hamilton and Mary Lindsay had three children after the start of civil registration: Mary, born 5 February 1855 in Hamilton Archibald, born 13 July 1857 in Avondale John, born 6 February 1860 in Avondale The 'Community contributed' index also lists Marion, born 6 May 1850 in Fairhall and James, born 11 September 1852 in Hamilton. I never trust 100% anything I find in the 'Community contributed' IGI, but it can be a useful pointer to finding reliable information. Go for the birth certificate of Mary, born 1855. In 1855, the first year of civil registration, certificates contained a huge amount of information that was not collected in later years.
