very well said Dora Elizabeth in Ont Canada ---------- Original Message ---------- From: Dora Smith via <lanark@rootsweb.com> Date: July 31, 2016 at 9:31 AM This reply might have been intended to be positive, and might have thought a very short statement would get that across, but I really don't like the snippy tone. It didn't come across that the post was meant to be political, and the list owner probably didn't think so either. The correct response was never have the list owner eat who wrote it for dinner! We are human beings on this list and had better treat each other accordingly. That snippy tone makes it sound like the person who made the post is worthless and should forthwith be automatically dumped in the outer darkness by impersonal forces. I don't think so! Let he who has never committed the same sin cast the first stone! I think what it really was was subtle racism, so positively put that it got right by the listowner. It came across as Scottish pride, and it may have been meant to be Scottish pride - until you realized that, wait a minute, these people are first of all annoyed at Michelle Obama for existing, and second, annoyed at her saying Black slaves were even capable of sophisticated architecture and building (which they were and did), because they were worthless Black slaves, INSTEAD of that everything worthwhile in the U.S. Capitol was REALLY done by SCOTTISH people, which is not even a reasonable statement. I think that probably got past a lot of people. It has not come across that people are offended because they mentioned Michelle Obama's speech, though anything is possible. We are all racist, people. It's a racist society. We grew up in a racist society. We can't get around it. Often people don't even realize they said something racist, and the correct thing to do is not get them on the defensive. The person who said this clearly among other things did not think it through before saying it. In fact, Scottish and Irish people say this kind of outrageous boast all the time over big jugs of whiskey; it's part of the culture. The correct thing to do is mildly point it out, or correct it, like I did - hey, Black slaves were not worthless, they were competent architects and builders and craftsmen and many had a hand in building the Capital, and so did Swedes, Germans, and a lot of other people, not blow up and I'm leaving the list! Don't any of you watch those TV programs like "What would you do?" You handle racism by tactfully trying to get the person who said it to think about it. "I don't see it that way", or turn to the person spoken TO and say, "I'm sorry about her." Both make it clear that you don't agree, and set the matter straight, WITHOUT being confrontational. The kind of snittiness I am seeing is usually the WRONG thing to do. We all have a delete button, use it in the event the topic is of no or little interest to you. What can one say to the responses that have become rather RUDE. Let it go, unsubscribe if you wish end of story. Everyone is free to join whatever group they want, I for one will stay with this list that has offered so much to so many over the years. List owner is a thankless job, one is not paid rather they give of their own time. We have learned that there is little tolerance from many. I am amazed that a statement about the White house has come to this, how about all the recipes that have been posted here, are they genealogy, I think not. They are about the culture of the country, and brought back memories of my grandmother for me. We did not have this sort of reaction, indeed some asked if we could get back to the subject of genealogy and the list continued peacefully. Go if you want and let the rest of us continue in peace. https://www.viator.com/tours/Glasgow/City-Sightseeing-Glasgow-Hop-On-Hop-Off-Tour/d740-2065GLAS For anyone, no matter whether a ‘native’ or visitor to Glasgow, the hop-on, hop-off bus tour of Glasgow city areas of interest earns five stars. The tour bus stops right outside the door of the Mitchell Library, for one, so that you could spend time there and then when through with one’s genealogy research, could wave down one of the tour buses and return to George Square, having taken in more ‘viewscapes’ while at it. As a born and bred Glaswegian, I saw a lot of Glasgow on one of those tour buses that I never had any reason to visit whilst living in Glasgow. Incidentally, for any admirer of Robert Burns, the Mitchell has one of the largest collections in the world to do with Robert Burns, Scotland’s national poet, who is honoured by a spacious room dedicated to his works. The Mitchell also has census records since 1841. Go to this link for further information on the Mitchell: http://www.glasgowfamilyhistory.org.uk/Pages/Home.aspx?gclid=CKCDor-KtbwCFSn4wgodH3YAbA Maisie
Ruth, What the heck is this all about? Does it have its genesis when I remarked that Michelle Obama commented on the White House being built by slaves, followed by my remark that she should perhaps have credited 'others' as being involved? I can't get on the Lanark Archives link to check just exactly what I did say. This Dora dame gets up my nose as she really expanded unnecessarily about Scots not being the only ones to be so important, or words to that effect. Others put a not so subtle political/racial slant on a simple remark. I'm not going to be bothered defending my post if that is what started this whole thing. People use any excuse to vent whatever is bothering them to make a big statement that they are going to unsubscribe. The ones recently have contributed nothing to the list, so sayonara! We are all proud of our heritage and perhaps it does not hurt to see what is going on in the rest of the world. My grandparents were from Scotland and two years ago I fulfilled my life long dream of going to Scotland. I met with many wonderful people who educated me on many things that I would not have known had I not gone to this little town. Upon returning home I was anxious to share my experiences with family and friends. It is a good day when I have learned something new or exchanged ideas with someone. I view this dialogue on the White House as another form of education. There have been times on this list when folks are posting, "where is everyone", or "is the list down". I intend to stay with the list, and yes upon occasion get a chuckle out of the antics of some but in the end it all comes full circle and genealogy becomes the main focus as it should. In keeping with genealogy my focus is in the Chalmers and Lennie families from Carluke. I agree with others that it is an ’over the top’ reaction as this list and others offer so much more helpful information in our evergoing quest to fill in the jigsaw puzzle of our sometimes elusive forbears. By extension, just the mention of granite workers in Dalbeattie, reminded me of my far-out cousin’s granite worker relatives in Dalbeattie, thence to Vermont, that has now prompted me to revisit that side of my father’s ‘tree’ --- so forget about the overreaction to the mild political comments by a couple of listers---this is the primary focus of what this list is all about. My own biases: I do not care to spend any more time on Facebook as I think the rootsweb sites are more far-flung and productive. One can go all the way back to the beginnings of the Lanark Archives which began with one contributor to grow to well over 1,000 in one month, to reconnect with a helpful reference. I LOVE the people on this list and so look forward to reading all the posts. I have no trouble disregarding comments that I may not agree with, but am eagerly awaiting the stories and posts, especially those from Maisie and Nivard. There are always interesting things that may lead to a discovery for the history of my ancestors. I cherish the insight into the life of my Scot ancestors who lived in and around the Glasgow area. I never post anything. The only thing I could add would be things I've learned here. I've been doing research on my family since 1982 and don't intend to quit anytime soon. My thanks to all the wonderful people who have contributed so much. Cece Braun, St. Louis, MO

I agree. Fewer people are doing genealogical research nowadays, and online resources have matured, so there is less Rootsweb discussion, but the resource remains invaluable. The notion that one can begin anything at all from scratch, free from the past, or unindebted to others, could not conceivably be more wrong. -Karl Popper, philosopher and a professor (28 Jul 1902-1994) Or to phrase it in the braid Scots, “Dinnae fash yersel wi’ the passing scene.” -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Too bad that an innocuous comment by First Lady Michelle Obama about slaves building the White House resulted in a couple or so comments taking it to the next level of political criticism.
