    1. [Lanark] Fw: Formality changes to christening in Glasgow Cathedral
    2. Maisie Egger
    3. FYI How times have become so lax, even at the level of the cathedral when my parents had their membership revoked in the beautiful Barony church, right opposite Glasgow Cathedral. Their ‘crime?’ They had not taken communion in five years! Such was kept track of on your communion card which an elder or deacon delivered to the house to be sure you knew communion ‘was coming up.’ In these times, I wonder if the Church of Scotland has such rigid communion requirements in light of the fact that babies can now be christened without too much rigidity to form. Do you think John Calvin would have been happy about this laid back ‘commitment’ at the cathedral to ‘introducing the child into the house of God?’ http://www.glasgowcathedral.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Baptism-Non-Members.pdf Maisie

    3. If you upload your raw data from Ancestry to Gedmatch, and do the assorted ethnic analyses there, you'll get a better feel for what goes into them. Most English people have a large component of ancestry from the Middle East/ southwestern Asia, and it shows up as everything from southwestern Asia to British. Most of it is Neolithic in age, though the Indo-European people came from the same vicinity, and they went to central Europe and Scandinavia before dispersing. They went westward with the Celts, and also came to Great Britain wiht the Vikings. 3. http://scottishmilitarydisasters.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=34:quick-guide-to-the-scottish-regiments&catid=1:smd&Itemid=2 Read just for curiosity. My father, John Alexander Spence Clint, served in the HLI and then Labour Corps in WWI (was wounded and suffered from shell shock from which he never got over). My father’s cousin, John Toall, served with the Royal Scots in WWI and was awarded the MM (Military Medal) when he and another fellow soldier captured some German soldiers. My brother James served with the A & S H (Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders) in Egypt during WWII. My brother John Alexander Spent Clint (named after my father) served with the R.N. (Royal Navy) during WWII, and then my brother Peter Clint served in the National Service after the end of WWII. Other relatives served in mostly ‘British’ regiments and not particularly Scottish ones, such as my father, my brother, and my father’s cousin. As can be seen from the map, the HLI was centred in and around Glasgow, whereas the Royal Scots recruited from the Edinburgh and Lothians region. There was such a hue and cry when so many of the traditional Scottish regiments were amalgamated, but the higher-ups did not listen and such as the Seaforth Highlanders were disbanded 1961, and the famous Black Watch, the Argylls, etc., were combined with other Scottish regiments and given some generic regimental name. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/9251240/SCOTTISH-battalions-to-lose-their-historic-names-as-one-infantry-unit-cut Maisie

    3. Jean, Hate to be an old biddy, but it wouldn't surprise me if somewhere along the way someone on my DNA profile came from Timbuktu, according to some 'specialist,' perhaps On the actual family tree, I'm as far back as 1645 with the English lot, Irish-English-Scottish lot from the early 1700s, and then my father's Doonhamers since the 'year dot.' All seemingly 'white folks!' The direct line shows no mixture anywhere from beyond the British Isles...but where everyone came from originally, I do not know, nor really care. Joe is a mixture of Austrian/Irish. The Austrians are such a mixed-up bunch with so many invasions down through history, not to mention the Irish. He couldn't care less about any of it! I suppose if one were of a mixed race (by colour) that might be different as there is so much discrimination and bigotry such people have to put up with. It's interesting if you can be bothered with it. I can't. I'd rather figure out a knitting or crochet pattern...but not a math solution! If the company that did your brother's genes didn't give him a breakdown of his genetic heritage, and yours did, I think he should be asking for his money back. Anne
